IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future all cars, buses and trucks will be driverless. The only people travelling inside these vehicles will be passengers.

Do you think the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Technology and innovation have made the transport facility function possible even without a driver. In the coming years, we can come across a situation where the passengers will be the only ones inside a vehicle. This has both benefits and drawbacks. Although it will cost more, I believe this technology will reduce accidents caused because of drivers' loss of focus and create an efficient travelling experience which is a major plus point that outweighs the demerits.

The primary disadvantage of self-driven vehicles is that the are likely to be more expensive. This is because this sophisticated level of technology requires advanced machineries and a lot of investment regarding time and money to build. For example, a self-driven car would require parts and sensors that would cost a lot more than normal cars. Lack of passengers' faith upon these types of facilities during its initial stages could be another demerit. However, this cannot match the stronger side of self-driven vehicles.

The advantages are more significant. Drivers' emotion and mental situation has a huge impact on their driving. There have been cases where disturbed mental health and tiredness among drivers led to catastrophic accidents. With the advent of self-driven transport facilities, this type of issue can be solved. Additionally, public transport without drivers will help to enhance transport efficiency as trains and buses will reach and leave their stations on time. Therefore, vehicles without drivers will be far more advantageous.

In conclusion, I think lower rates of accidents and efficient transport facilities overshadow its higher costs. For these reasons, I believe the advantages overweigh the disadvantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. The ideas are relevant, focusing on safety and efficiency as the primary benefits, while acknowledging cost as a drawback. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the point about 'passengers' faith' is mentioned but not fully explored, and the argument regarding efficiency could be supported with more specific examples beyond just mentioning trains and buses. To reach a higher band, you should aim to expand your supporting points with more depth and nuance, ensuring that the link between your arguments and the overall position remains strong throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use cohesive devices such as 'Additionally,' 'However,' and 'Therefore' to link ideas effectively. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between the discussion of costs and the shift to advantages in the second paragraph is a bit abrupt. Improving the variety of your linking words and ensuring that the progression of ideas feels more natural would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'sophisticated,' 'catastrophic,' and 'innovation' correctly. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'transport facility function' in the opening sentence, which sounds unnatural, and 'demerits,' which is less common in this context. While you communicate your ideas clearly, the vocabulary is generally functional rather than sophisticated. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and topic-specific vocabulary related to autonomous technology, such as 'artificial intelligence,' 'infrastructure,' or 'mitigate risks,' to show a greater flexibility and control over your lexical choices.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You have good control over basic grammar, and your meaning is always clear. There are a few minor errors, such as 'the are likely' (a typo) and 'passengers' faith upon' (preposition choice). While you attempt complex structures, they are sometimes slightly repetitive in their construction. To achieve a higher band, focus on increasing the variety of your complex sentences—for example, by using more conditional clauses or passive voice constructions—and ensure that you proofread carefully to eliminate small slips that can affect the overall impression of your grammatical accuracy.
