Student answer (Band 6.5)
In the present world, technology has spread to every corner of the world, and in the future, with further advances in technology, vehicles will no longer require drivers, and only passengers will travel. In my view, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, and this essay will shed light on the relevant factors.
The greatest advantage of this situation is an improvement in the quality of life. It definitely improves individuals’ standards of living and also makes travelling more convenient. One example that illustrates this is that office workers can do their work in their cars. By doing this, they can probably save time and are able to do extra things. Hence, they can produce more productive work and balance their work-life schedule.
One more plus point is that people may feel relaxed during long journeys. If driverless cars are invented in the future, individuals will not need to drive. Due to prolonged driving, they may experience significant issues such as pain in the neck and wrists. Therefore, driverless vehicles can be beneficial for their physical well-being. Another advantage worth mentioning is that, by using the features of automatic cars, travellers can change the speed according to their comfort. They can also feel relaxed during the whole trip.
Despite these positive points, there are also a few drawbacks. The most alarming factor is reduced employment. In cases where sectors are heavily dependent on drivers, some businesses may be closed. As a result, people may lose their jobs, such as those working in driving schools and other driving-related businesses, which may also impact the economic growth of the country. A further issue is that there might be some chances of accidents. Even when humans are driving, there are already countless accidents. Therefore, machines can surely cause accidents as well if they receive incorrect map data or misleading information about directions.
Taking everything into account, the advantages are more beneficial compared to the disadvantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of driverless vehicles and clearly stating a personal position that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. In the body paragraphs, relevant ideas regarding quality of life, physical well-being, reduced employment, and safety risks are introduced and extended with examples, such as office workers being able to work during their commute. While some of the supporting points, such as changing vehicle speed for comfort, are slightly repetitive, the main arguments are adequately developed. The position remains clear throughout the essay and is reinforced in the concluding summary. This performance aligns well with the requirements for Band 7.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, beginning with an introduction, moving through well-structured body paragraphs examining distinct advantages and drawbacks, and concluding appropriately. Cohesive devices such as 'The greatest advantage', 'One more plus point', 'Despite these positive points', and 'Taking everything into account' are used to guide the reader through the text, although some transitions feel slightly formulaic. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate ideas, ensuring that the overall arrangement remains coherent and easy to follow, supporting a solid Band 7 score.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task. Less common lexical items and phrases are attempted, such as 'standards of living', 'work-life schedule', 'physical well-being', and 'economic growth'. While the vocabulary is generally functional and communicates meaning clearly, there are occasional instances of slightly repetitive or simplistic phrasing, such as 'spread to every corner of the world' and 'plus point'. Word choice is mostly appropriate, and spelling is accurate throughout, fitting comfortably within the criteria for Band 6.5 or a solid Band 6.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writer demonstrates a satisfactory mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilising conditional structures and relative clauses such as 'If driverless cars are invented in the future, individuals will not need to drive' and 'businesses may be closed... which may also impact the economic growth'. There are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasing present, such as 'In the present world' and 'there might be some chances of accidents', but these errors do not impede communication. Punctuation is generally controlled, and sentence structures show sufficient variety to meet the criteria for Band 6.5.
