IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future all cars, buses and trucks will be driverless. The only people travelling inside these vehicles will be passengers.
Do you think the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Honestly, the idea of driverless cars is quite unique and innovative. The concept of people travelling inside the vehicles without the driver shows how the technology has evolved so far. As far as my knowledge is concerned, I haven't really experienced or seen such technology in my life. But if it exits in any part of the word. I hope people should be getting adavntage from that. One thing more to add, it can also be helpful in a way that it saves waiting time. When you need you can just simply use the machine without the driver presence.
On the other side, considering other facts it could be potential risk for the lives of people. Despite being an innovation we still can't completely trust a machine. It can cause accidents and usually sometimes the driver is very vigilent and knows when to stop the bus when a certain thing crosses the road. In simpkle words, people wouldnt be able to trust their lives to sit in such a bus espeically i think the old ones and the parents with young ones would obviously not prefer such vehicles. Even when i was in my Matsers, i used to travel throughlocal transport and i think people are always relyig pn drivers.
In my opinion, this is not a good approach. The things human is capable to do and control should not be controlled by the machine or robots. Well, considering the scenario, i believe disadvanages of such vehicles outweighs the advantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to address the prompt by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of driverless vehicles, ultimately taking a clear position that the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. However, the development of ideas is limited and relies heavily on personal anecdotes and conversational filler, such as 'Honestly' and 'Well, considering the scenario'. While the writer mentions waiting times as an advantage and safety risks as a disadvantage, these points are under-developed and lack the depth expected for an academic essay. Generalisations are present, and the reasoning remains somewhat simplistic throughout the response. Therefore, it meets the criteria for Band 5.0, where the task is addressed, but the ideas are limited and under-developed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organised into three paragraphs, attempting to cover an introduction, a body paragraph, and a conclusion. However, the overall progression is disrupted by abrupt shifts in topic and repetitive sentence structures. Cohesive devices are minimal, often inaccurate, or used awkwardly, such as 'One thing more to add', 'On the other side', and 'In simpkle words'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of ideas lacks clear logical transitions. For instance, the transition from potential accidents to personal anecdotes about travelling during Master's studies feels disjointed and affects the flow of the argument. These features align with Band 5.0, demonstrating some organisation but lacking clear overall progression.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with frequent spelling and word-choice errors that occasionally strain the reader. Examples include 'exits' instead of 'exists', 'adavntage', 'vigelent', 'simpkle', and 'pescially'. While the writer attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'innovative' and 'potential risk', the range remains limited and minimally adequate for the task. Collocation and word formation errors, such as 'parents with young ones would obviously not prefer such vehicles', highlight the constraints in the student's lexical control. This corresponds to a Band 5.0 level, where noticeable errors cause some difficulty for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The text displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside a few faulty attempts at complex forms. There are frequent errors in punctuation, capitalization, and tense consistency, such as 'hope people should be getting adavntage', 'people wouldnt be able', and 'The things human is capable to do'. Articles and subject-verb agreement also show consistent errors, for example, 'the old ones' and 'disadvanages of such vehicles outweighs'. These frequent grammatical errors cause some difficulty for the reader and restrict the essay to Band 5.0, where attempts at complex sentences are often faulty and errors are frequent.
