IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future all cars, buses and trucks will be driverless. The only people travelling inside these vehicles will be passengers.

Do you think the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

As far as this topic is concerned, I believe that driverless cars, buses and trucks will have more advantages than disadvantages. Although this technology may create some concerns, it can make transportation safer, more convenient and efficient.

Firstly, driverless vehicles can improve road safety by reducing accidents caused by human errors. Drivers may become tired, distracted or careless, whereas automated vehicles can follow traffic rules and react quickly to dangerous situations. Moreover, these vehicles can help elderly and disabled people travel independently without needing someone to drive them.

On the other hand, driverless vehicles may have some disadvantages. One major concern is that many professional drivers could lose their jobs, particularly truck and bus drivers. Furthermore, the technology may sometimes fail because of software problems, poor weather or technical faults. This could cause serious accidents if the vehicle cannot respond correctly.

In conclusion, although driverless vehicles may cause unemployment and technical problems, I believe that their advantages outweigh the disadvantages. They can reduce road accidents, improve transportation and provide greater independence for many people. Therefore, governments should carefully develop and regulate this technology.
