IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future all cars, buses and trucks will be driverless. The only people travelling inside these vehicles will be passengers.

Do you think the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

With the rapid technology development, the issue of driverless vehicles has gained a widespread attention, and within the coming decades cars, trucks and buses may operate without human drivers. Although, some argue about the risks of that technology, I firmly believe that driverless vehicles will bring far more benefits than disadvantages.

To begin with drawbacks, autonomous cars pose some risks, including accidents and casualities that totally depend on the malfunction technology. Since the driverless vehicles totally dependend on the sensors, softwares and automated systems, the risks of devasted accidents due to bug or hacking could not be eliminated. For instance, the risk of sensor or software malfunction ine the severe weather condistions- smog, fog or rain. A news was reported in the USA, of an accident, a whole family died traveling to countryside, in a driverless car system stopped functioning due to the fog, they took the wrong move and as a result they fell into the river. However, these risks could be reduced with several safety measures and by introducing backup mechanisms.

Despite these concerns, automated cars could provide greater benefits in terms of road safety. Human error is one of the major potential risk which could be happened during driving and as a result major road accident might be occured, as drivers become tired, or distracted for some reasons or might be possible due to the highly consumed of alcohal. In contrast, automated vehicles are providing safety precautions due to the highly advanced technology and by modern softwares it reduce human errors. This is a crucial advanced system which is improving day by day and results could be provide more benefits in terms of human disorders.

In conclusion, driverless vehicles may create risks related to technical failures and cybersecurity, including the possibility of new forms of crime. Nevertheless, these problems can be reduced through backup systems, strict safety measures, and continuous technological improvements. I believe that advantages of driverless vehicles outweighs the disadvantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of driverless vehicles, taking a clear position that the advantages outweigh the drawbacks. The introduction and conclusion clearly state this stance, and body paragraphs explore both sides of the issue. The discussion on disadvantages includes technical failures, cybersecurity risks, and weather-related malfunctions, while the advantage section focuses on reducing human error and enhancing road safety. However, some ideas could be further developed with more precise examples; for instance, the anecdotal mention of a family accident lacks formal corroboration and feels slightly anecdotal rather than broadly analytical. Nevertheless, the main parts of the prompt are covered well, satisfying the requirements for a Band 6.5 to 7.0, and ultimately achieving a solid Band 7.0 for fully addressing all parts of the task with a clear position.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. It follows a traditional four-paragraph structure comprising an introduction, two body paragraphs examining drawbacks and benefits respectively, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader through the text, such as "To begin with drawbacks," "Despite these concerns," and "In conclusion." Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, keeping distinct themes isolated. However, referencing and referencing markers are occasionally repetitive or somewhat mechanical. For instance, transitional phrases can feel formulaic, and minor referencing slips occur, such as "the malfunction technology" instead of 'malfunctioning technology'. Overall, the progression of ideas is easy to follow, making Band 6.5 or 7.0 appropriate. The clear overarching progression and functional use of cohesive devices earn a solid Band 6.5.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary suitable for an academic discussion on technology and transportation. Less common lexical items are attempted, such as "autonomous cars," "cybersecurity," "malfunction," and "backup mechanisms." However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation errors throughout the text. Examples include "rapid technology development" (rapid technological development), "casualities" (casualties), "devasted accidents" (devastated or devastating accidents), and "highly consumed of alcohal" (heavy consumption of alcohol). While these errors do not severely impede communication, they reveal limitations in word precision and stylistic control. The vocabulary is minimally adequate for the task, with some successful attempts at less common phrasing offset by recurring inaccuracies, placing the response squarely at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating subordinate clauses and conditional constructions (e.g., "Although some argue about the risks of that technology, I firmly believe that..."). However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in verb forms, prepositions, articles, and word forms. Examples include "driverless vehicles totally dependend" (dependent), "malfunction ine the severe weather condistions" (in the severe weather conditions), "a news was reported" (a news report or a story was reported), and "advantages of driverless vehicles outweighs" (outweigh). Furthermore, punctuation and phrasing can be clumsy. While complex structures are attempted, they are frequently faulty due to these persistent surface-level errors. Because the errors occur frequently across different sentence types and can occasionally cause minor reader strain, a Band 6.0 is appropriate.
