Student answer (Band 6.0)

Driverless cars, buses and trucks is a new innovation that will be introduced in future. The only people travelling inside those vehicles will be passengers. There are some advantages and disadvantages of this innovation, however, I believe that the drawbacks of it outweigh the advantages.

One major disadvantage of this development is that it is can be less safe for passengers as compared to human-driven cars, buses or trucks. Although, the technology has advanced in recent years and is further improving, there are still some concerns regarding the reliability on the robots. Driverless cars, buses and trucks which will often be driven by computers can still lack the understanding of roads which can lead to high risk for passengers. For example, a computer driven car can experience a malfunction during the trip on road which can lead to serious consequences. This can be dangerous if those cars apply brakes on highways with other moving cars. Therefore, driverless cars or buses can be less safe than human-driven cars.

Another major disadvantage of this is that many drivers may face challenges of losing jobs if replaced by the driverless cars. This can lead to more unemployment and cause economic instability in a country. For example, if more cars, buses and trucks will be driven by robots, there will be less demand for drivers seeking jobs. Hence, this is another reason why I believe that driverless cars has more disadvantages than advantages.

In conclusion, there are some advantages of driverless cars such as availability of cars at anytime and accuracy of directions, I still believe that the disadvantages of it outweigh the advantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both advantages and disadvantages, establishing a clear position that the drawbacks outweigh the benefits. The ideas presented, such as safety concerns and job displacement, are relevant to the topic of driverless vehicles. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For example, the argument regarding safety centers mostly on computer malfunction without exploring other facets like hacking or weather conditions, and the conclusion briefly lists advantages without fully integrating them into the body paragraphs. These tendencies reflect a Band 6 level, where all parts of the task are addressed, but some ideas remain under-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs focusing on disadvantages, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points. Cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'For example', and 'Therefore' are employed to guide the reader through the text, though referencing and linking can sometimes feel mechanical, as seen in the repetition of transitional phrases. Furthermore, the progression of ideas is occasionally hindered by repetitive phrasing, placing the response comfortably within the Band 6 descriptor where cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms related to the prompt and discussion, such as 'innovation', 'economic instability', and 'malfunction'. However, there are noticeable limitations and inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'reliability on the robots' instead of 'reliability of robots' and 'driverless cars has' instead of 'have'. While the writer attempts less common vocabulary like 'consequences' and 'displacement' concepts, frequent minor errors in word formation and preposition usage restrict the score to a Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures. However, grammatical errors are noticeable throughout the text. Notable errors include subject-verb agreement issues such as 'Driverless cars, buses and trucks is' instead of 'are', and missing articles or incorrect prepositions, such as 'during the trip on road'. Despite these errors, they rarely impede overall communication, meaning the reader can easily follow the arguments. This balance of mixed structures and occasional persistent errors aligns well with the Band 6 descriptors.
