IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future all cars, buses and trucks will be driverless. The only people travelling inside these vehicles will be passengers.

Do you think the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Whether the driverless cars are useful or not has been the topic of debate for past few decades. Some people perceive the advent of driverless technology as a ground-breaking advancement in the history of advancemets. However, others argue that humans are the best drivers and their presence in driving will be inevitable. This essay will critically analyse both arguments with relevant justifications.

Many people who fear driving or feel lazy to drive consider this innovation very useful. They don't feel dependent on a driver to take them to their desired places. Moreover, the budget dedicated to drivers is also no longer needed and the amount can be saved.

The discovery of driverless cars may also be appreciated by introverts because they will now have a more peaceful and silent journey.

Although the technological advancements have brought so much revolution and ease in the past few years, it has raised many concerns as well. For example, the arrival of AI has significantly reduced jobs for people. The tasks that used to be done by employees are now easily automated by AI tools. Similarly, it is a rising fear that driverless cars would significantly impact the transport services department. When the driverless cars will be available, no one would prefer to hire a driver leading to reduction in driving jobs.

In my opinion, Driving is a very critical task that requires keen focus. Repetitive tasks may be completely replaced by AI but sensitive tasks like driving that include human lives still need human measurements and judgements. Even a small negligence during driving may lead to a significant number of consequences.Hence the disadvanges of driverless cars dominate the advantages of it.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the task and presents a clear position that the disadvantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the advantages. The student covers both sides of the argument, discussing benefits such as convenience and cost-saving, alongside drawbacks like job losses and safety concerns. However, the development of ideas tends to be somewhat superficial and limited in scope, fitting a Band 6 descriptor well. For instance, the point regarding introverts having a 'peaceful and silent journey' is underdeveloped, and the argument about human judgment in driving is brief. To reach a higher band, the student should extend their supporting arguments with more detailed explanations or concrete examples.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a clear focus: introduction, advantages, disadvantages, and conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Although', 'For example', and 'Similarly' are used to connect ideas, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different arguments. While referencing is generally clear, occasional awkward phrasing in transitions prevents the response from achieving a Band 7. Overall, the structural framework is solid and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'ground-breaking advancement', 'inevitable', and 'significantly reduced'. However, there are notable lexical errors and awkward collocations throughout the text. For example, the phrase 'history of advancemets' contains a spelling error, 'human measurements' is an incorrect collocation for human judgment, and the phrase 'feel lazy to drive' is overly informal. Despite these errors, the vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main points clearly, aligning with the criteria for Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional and concessive structures like 'Although the technological advancements have brought...' and 'When the driverless cars will be available...'. There are several grammatical errors and awkward structures, such as the incorrect article use in 'Whether the driverless cars' and a tense error in 'When the driverless cars will be available' (where the present simple should follow 'when'). Punctuation errors also occur, such as the missing space after the period in 'consequences.Hence'. However, these errors rarely impede overall communication, placing the grammar firmly at Band 6.
