IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future all cars, buses and trucks will be driverless. The only people travelling inside these vehicles will be passengers.

Do you think the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

As we can see how fast a world is growing in technology or even in any other field. It is not too far people will travel alone in the vehicle because the way we have seen growth in technical fields all the vehicles including cars, buses and trucks will be invented that can be run without drivers.

The one of the most compelling argument in the favour of the advantages is that people can travel alone like if the person has any disability. He/She can have his/her own car and he/she can travel to anywhere. For Example a disable person has emergency to go to hospital, he don't have to find other person who can drive his vehicle and take him to hospital. He can go without driver. Another reason is that a person who like to travel solo can go without driver to anywhere. For instance I myself love to travel alone and i can't driver so if the vehicles will be automatic i can go without driver.

Another significant reason that gives upper hand driverless vehicle is that most of the females don't want any stranger with them in the car who can take her to hospital, airport etc. For example, a female has to go to the airport to pick her husband and she don't know how to driver. She can go without driver if she has driverless vehicle. One other reason is that if a passenger is under 18 year old and according to the rules of his country, he is not allowed to driver the vehicle. He can go somewhere he wants to go in an automatic vehicle. To illustrate my brother is under 18 and he is not allowed to driver officialy by law in pakistan, if he wants to go to bazar he always try to contact father to take him to the shops.

To wrap it up, the incline in the growth of technological fields is good for humans in a world, because it support people in many ways, like if in future there will be driver less vehicles, we can go anywhere where we want.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing the advantages of driverless vehicles, such as aiding disabled people, solo travelers, and those unable to drive. However, the task requires weighing advantages against disadvantages, and the candidate fails to discuss any disadvantages, resulting in an incomplete treatment of the prompt. While a clear position is presented supporting the benefits, the ideas lack full extension and are somewhat repetitive, relying heavily on similar examples involving driving to the hospital or airport. Because the negative side of the issue is completely ignored, the response cannot achieve a band score higher than 5.0 according to the task response criteria.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is divided into paragraphs, including an introduction, body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion. However, the logical progression is weak because ideas are introduced abruptly and lack smooth transitions. Cohesive devices are used repetitively and sometimes inaccurately, such as 'The one of the most compelling argument' and 'One other reason is that'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of ideas is somewhat disjointed, with multiple separate points crowded into a single body paragraph without clear separation. Referencing is occasionally unclear, which disrupts the flow and requires the reader to decode the intended meaning.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The lexical resource is limited and repetitive throughout the essay. The student repeatedly uses basic phrases such as 'travel alone', 'without driver', and 'go to hospital'. There are frequent word choice and collocation errors, such as 'he don't have to find other person', 'i can't driver', and 'officialy by law'. Less common vocabulary is attempted without success or accurate control. Spelling mistakes and grammatical form errors related to vocabulary (e.g., 'disable person' instead of 'disabled person', 'bazar' instead of 'bazaar') are noticeable and occasionally cause strain for the reader, placing the response firmly at band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5

The essay displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple and flawed complex sentences. There are frequent and systematic grammatical errors, particularly regarding subject-verb agreement ('he don't have', 'it support'), modal verb usage ('can go without driver'), and infinitive/base verb confusion ('to driver'). Punctuation and capitalization are also inconsistent, with lower-case 'i' used repeatedly and missing commas in conditional or introductory structures. The high frequency of basic structural errors causes considerable difficulty for the reader and prevents the writing from reaching a higher band level.
