IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future all cars, buses and trucks will be driverless. The only people travelling inside these vehicles will be passengers.
Do you think the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
It is predicted that all the automobiles such as cars, buses, and trucks will be fully automated and these will have seating only for passengers. In my opinion, the advantages of these types of vehicles outeigh the disadvantages because they provide better traffic management and increase productivity of people.
One main drawback of driverless vechicles is that it will replace all the drivers. In current time, a large number of people are employed in that sector and introducting the automated vechicles will make them to lose their jobs. As a result, unemployment rate will go up and there will be pressure in the government for their proper management. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The student introduces a clear position in the introduction stating that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, and attempts to address both sides by mentioning job losses and traffic management. However, the response is severely truncated due to stopping abruptly mid-sentence with only 131 words produced, which falls far short of the 250-word minimum requirement. Because the second body paragraph is incomplete and the ideas are undeveloped due to length, the response can only be addressed partially. To improve, the student must ensure they write at least 250 words and fully develop each body paragraph with supporting examples and explanations.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay demonstrates some basic organization with a clear introductory sentence and cohesive markers such as 'One main drawback' and 'In addition to this' to signal new points. However, the overall progression is abruptly cut short because the text trails off in the second paragraph. Paragraphing is attempted, but the incomplete nature of the response hinders logical flow and development. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well for the small amount of text produced, but referencing and referencing chains cannot be fully evaluated due to the premature ending.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common collocations and topic-related terminology such as 'fully automated', 'traffic management', and 'unemployment rate'. There are, however, a few spelling and lexical errors in the text, such as 'outeigh' instead of 'outweigh', 'vechicles' instead of 'vehicles', and 'introducting' instead of 'introducing'. Additionally, the phrase 'pressure in the government' would be more natural as 'pressure on the government'. Despite these occasional inaccuracies, communication is not seriously impeded by the vocabulary used.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writing contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'It is predicted that all the automobiles...' and 'As a result, unemployment rate will go up...'. There are several grammatical errors present in the text, including article omissions ('pressure in government') and spelling issues that spill into grammar perception. Furthermore, because the response ends abruptly mid-sentence ('As automatic vehicles are fully au'), it demonstrates a lack of control over sentence completion. However, the structures attempted prior to the cutoff show some control over complex clauses, placing the grammar at a modest level.
