IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future all cars, buses and trucks will be driverless. The only people travelling inside these vehicles will be passengers.

Do you think the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the future, all the means of transporation will be driverless. The passengers will be the sole travellers inside these vehicles. This does sound quite advantageous to some, but the risks such driverless vehicles brings to human life far exceeds the advantages it brings.

The idea of driverless vehicles sounds promising to many people as it provides convenience to those who can't drive, but this should not overshadow the risks they bring. A machine, no matter how accurate it is, can not be trusted with the sole responsibility of driving on its own. There are not enough proof from researches that AI automated vehicles can drive while keeping the safety of both passenger and pedestrian in view. Researchers have been working on these concerns to public safety by marking such vehicles with specific colurs and emojis, but it is shown that although pedestrians can identify such vehicles, runners and joggers do not have much time to identify them, which can result in an accident.

Futhermore, AI automated vehicles can solve the sleep problem for solo travellers who are venturing on a long-distance journey, but there is still a big risk that a vehicle no matter how advance it is can lose control. Leaving every decision decision of driving to a machine is quite dangerous on its own. Forexample, if an animal like deer comes out of nowhere and crashes with the car, a driver, even if he is sleepy, can manuever it in order to avoid crashing. On the other hand, if the driver is sleeping, a machine will be less likely to act instantly in such situation. This can cause a huge accident which can result in multiple casualties and even death.

Overall, there is an expected rise in the use of driverless vehicles in the future, with the only travellers being the passengers. Such vehicles do provides us with a lot of convenience, but still risks like casualties and death can not be overlooked. No matter how much a technology provides us with facilities, nothing can overcome a human life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of driverless vehicles, ultimately taking a clear position that the disadvantages (risks to human life) outweigh the benefits. The writer provides relevant ideas, such as convenience for non-drivers versus safety concerns for pedestrians and the limitations of AI in unexpected emergency scenarios. However, some arguments lack deep development. For instance, the mention of runners and joggers not having time to identify specific vehicle markings is a specific point, but it could have been expanded with deeper elaboration. The position is maintained consistently throughout the essay, fulfilling the core requirements of Band 6.5 to 7.0, ultimately sitting comfortably at Band 6.5 due to slight under-development in supporting ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is generally coherent with an overall logical arrangement, moving from an introduction to body paragraphs discussing safety and emergency control, and concluding with a summary. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. However, cohesive devices are sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, the transition 'Futhermore' contains a spelling error and introduces a somewhat repetitive point about driving hazards. Referencing is occasionally slightly unclear, and logical progression between sentences can feel abrupt at times. The use of cohesive devices is adequate for the task, meeting the criteria for a solid Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student displays an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common terms such as 'over-shadow', 'casualties', and 'manuever'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that detract from the overall quality. Examples include 'transporation', 'colurs', 'Futhermore', 'advance' instead of 'advanced', and 'Forexample'. Furthermore, collocations are occasionally awkward, such as 'crashes with the car' instead of 'collides with the car'. These inaccuracies do not severely impede communication, placing the response squarely at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing conditional structures and relative clauses (e.g., 'A machine, no matter how accurate it is, can not be trusted...'). However, grammatical and punctuation errors are frequent enough to prevent a higher band. There are issues with subject-verb agreement and spelling, alongside punctuation slips. For example, 'transporation' and missing commas appear, and phrases like 'There are not enough proof' demonstrate basic agreement errors ('proof' is uncountable). Complex sentences often contain minor errors, though they rarely impede overall comprehension, reflecting the descriptors for Band 6.0.
