IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future all cars, buses and trucks will be driverless. The only people travelling inside these vehicles will be passengers.

Do you think the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years, it has become increasingly common that taxis and private vehicles have started driving automatically through artifical intellignece. While this development brings certain drawbacks, this essay argues that advantages significantly outweigh the disadvantages.

Admittedly, there are some negative aspects associated with autonomous driving. The primary concern is that autonomous driving has been made possble with the evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) and AI can make mistakes. These mistakes can lead to a range of accidents which can cause lethal damage as well. These driverless vehicles utilize a wide range of sensors to detect their environmental surrondings and to checking that the road is clear. Although, these sensors are fully calibrated, they can still malfunction and do not detect a human or an animal in front of the car resulting in an accident. For instance, last year majority of the accidents were recoreded for autonomous driving vehicles in the United States as a result of malfunction in the software of these cars.

Nevertheless, the benefits provided by autonomous driving are far more substantial. Cheif among these is the luxury it provides in helping people reach their destination without even touching the steering wheel of the car. By this I mean people can travel to different cities, or to places that are so far without getting tired and experiencing the journey as a passenger. Furthermore, these autonomous vehicles follow the traffic rules such as keeping in the right lane and following traffic signals more, helping in keeping the roads more safe. Take an example of the people that are killed in an accident by the people breaking the traffic light, thus these autonomous vehicles help in keeping the roads more safe for the individuals.

In conclusion, although driverless vehicles are not without their flaws, particularly regarding their software bugs and malfunctions, the overriding benefits of reaching your destination without feeling tired and making the roads more safer make it a highly positive development.

Coherence and Cohesion6.5
Lexical Resource5.5
Grammatical Range and Accuracy5.5
Overall6.0

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both advantages and disadvantages of driverless vehicles and clearly states a position that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. Ideas are extended and supported, such as discussing software malfunctions and safety benefits. However, there is a tendency to over-generalize in places, such as stating that 'last year majority of the accidents were recorded for autonomous driving vehicles,' which lacks precision and factual backing. The position is maintained throughout, satisfying the criteria for a Band 7 performance.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Information and ideas are coherently structured, starting with an introduction, moving to disadvantages, then advantages, and concluding appropriately. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to separate these main ideas. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'Admittedly,' 'Nevertheless,' and 'In conclusion,' though some referencing and connective choices are slightly repetitive or mechanical. Overall, the flow is logical and easy to follow, aligning well with Band 7 descriptors.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision, incorporating terms like 'autonomous driving,' 'artificial intelligence,' and 'substantial.' However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'artifical intellignece,' 'possble,' 'surrondings,' and 'Cheif.' Less common lexical items are attempted with mixed success, and awkward phrasings like 'getting tired and experiencing the journey as a passenger' limit the score. These errors do not impede communication, placing the response solidly in Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses (e.g., 'vehicles that are killed in an accident by the people breaking the traffic light'). There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasing choices, such as missing prepositions or incorrect verb forms (e.g., 'to checking that the road is clear,' 'majority of the accidents were recoreded for,' and 'making the roads more safer'). While these errors are noticeable and punctuation could be improved, they rarely impede overall communication, reflecting Band 6 performance.
