IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future all cars, buses and trucks will be driverless. The only people travelling inside these vehicles will be passengers.

Do you think the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Development on vehicles is expected to continue for the next coming years. These vehicles will all be automated and only travellers will be passengers inside these vehicles. This change can have both advantages and disadvantages. Despite of this magnifique innovation, in my own opinion there are more disadvantages that needs to be considered than its advantages.

The major advantage of this change is accuracy and precisement. Future vehicles will be fully machine dependent. Manufacturers will continue to develop specs and features that could make a car more accurate and precise for driving. This may result in better speed and timing.

On the other hand, the major disadvantage of this change is decline in job opportunities. A lot of drivers might lose their positions due to the reason of becoming these vehicles dependently machine operated. Special training and additional skills may be required that could add additonal costs to the drivers and operators. Another negative impact of these advancement is issues on safety. Being dependent on machines will not guarantee zero percent error. Although there will be operators that will operate and oversee the vehicle, it will not be an assurance that there will be no malfunctions to happen.

In conclusion, despite of the advantages of driverless vehicles being more accurate and precise, this does not outweigh the disadvatage of this innovation. Job opportunites and safety issues must be take into considerations carefully.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses both the advantages and disadvantages of driverless vehicles and takes a clear position that the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. However, the ideas are somewhat limited and under-developed, relying on brief explanations rather than fully extended arguments. Furthermore, the length requirement is NOT met, as the student's response contains only 232 words, falling short of the 250-word minimum. This under-length aspect negatively affects the overall task completion and prevents the score from reaching the higher bands. For these reasons, a band score of 5.5 is appropriate.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The text exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing advantages and disadvantages, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'On the other hand' and 'In conclusion', though referencing and transitions can occasionally feel mechanical or repetitive, as seen in the frequent repetition of 'these vehicles'. Logical progression is generally maintained throughout the response, qualifying it for a solid band 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'magnifique' (which contains a spelling error), 'precisement', and 'advancement'. However, there are noticeable word-choice and word-formation errors throughout the text, such as 'precisement' instead of precision, 'dependently machine operated', and 'disadvatage'. Despite these inaccuracies, communication is not severely impeded, fitting the descriptors for Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'Although there will be operators that will operate and oversee the vehicle, it will not be an assurance that there will be no malfunctions to happen.' However, there are frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, including 'Despite of this' (incorrect preposition usage), 'that needs to be considered' (subject-verb agreement), and 'must be take into considerations' (passive voice error). These errors do not completely obscure meaning, but they occur frequently enough to cap the score at Band 5.5.
