Student answer (Band 6.0)
In future all the vehicles from lightweight to heavyweight, will be automated. People will travel in these as passengers and not as drivers. These autonomous vehicles will have benefits and drawbacks of their own. However, in my opinion the advantages will outweigh their disadvantages.
On the one hand, driverless cars will enable travelers to communicate, perform some indoor activities and enjoy the outside view. This will make their journey memorable and everlasting. Moreover, these autonomous vehicles might not need drivers in order to transport various goods. Since there will be least human involvement, it can reduce considerably the traffic violations and the accidents that occur due to human errors. Additionally, vehicle sharing schemes can reduce the numer of cars in the city that in turn may result in less traffic congestion and thus, making the travel time efficient. Even if the automated trucks, travelling long distances malfunction, they can easily be spotted via online tracking.
On the other hand, automation can have disadvantages too. The amount of research and development required and the massive amount of trial and error can cost a fortune. Furthermore, in case of sharing, these cars will be covering more distances resulting in increased wear of its components. Thus, the vehicles may fall out of order sooner and need more production.
In conclusion, autonomous vehicles have numerous advantages like providing humans more valuable experiences to share, time efficiency, fuel efficiency, obedience to traffic laws and reduced traffic on road. Therefore, it's benefits outweigh its disadvantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of driverless vehicles and clearly stating a position that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. Main ideas, such as enhanced travel experiences, reduced human error, and increased wear and tear, are presented and extended. However, the length requirement was not met, as the response is 249 words, falling just one word short of the 250-word minimum. This minor technical shortfall slightly restricts the depth of development and necessitates a slight downward adjustment in the task achievement score. Nevertheless, the position remains clear throughout, and the ideas presented are directly relevant to the prompt. Band score: 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay displays a clear overall progression and logical organisation. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the two body paragraphs discussing advantages and disadvantages, and the conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably well to link ideas, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'Moreover'. However, referencing and transitions are at times slightly mechanical. For example, 'Even if the automated trucks, travelling long distances malfunction...' disrupts the flow slightly, and the phrase 'it's benefits' in the conclusion contains an error in referencing. Despite these minor issues, the writing remains coherent and easy to follow. Band score: 7.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms like 'autonomous vehicles', 'traffic congestion', and 'wear of its components'. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, though a few word choices and collocations are slightly unnatural, such as 'reduce considerably the traffic violations' (where 'considerably' is awkwardly placed) and 'numer of cars' (a spelling slip for 'number'). Another minor issue is the misuse of 'it's benefits' instead of 'its benefits' in the concluding sentence. Overall, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the message clearly without impeding communication. Band score: 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, featuring relative clauses ('that in turn may result') and conditional structures ('Even if the automated trucks... malfunction, they can easily be spotted'). There are several instances of good grammatical control, but also a number of noticeable errors. For instance, the opening sentence 'In future all the vehicles' lacks an article ('In the future'), and there are awkward comma placements, such as 'automated trucks, travelling long distances malfunction'. Additionally, 'it's benefits' in the final paragraph is a punctuation error. While these errors occur, they do not impede the overall communication of the writer's ideas. Band score: 6.0.
