In the future all cars, buses and trucks will be driverless. The only people travelling inside these vehicles will be passengers.

Do you think the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

As technology is becoming a common part of our daily life these days, there are possibilities of driverless cars, buses, and trucks. The passengers will only be the ones present in these vehicles with no driver. As this is becoming a common concern for almost everyone, i personally believe the advantages of it do not overweigh the disadvantages because driving is a full-time life-time responsibility and it is quite a discomfort to depend on a feelingless operator instead of a person.

Although, a driverless vehicle is beneficial in terms of independency and freedom. For instance, a person who lacks a driving license or is disabled will eventually find this a best alternative to reach at workplace in time. Also, he has to put zero energy towards it as the car will move by itself, taking to the desired location.

Consequently, there are some downsides of a remote vehicle, comparable to the one with a driver is a sense of security and emotionless driving. For example, a person sitting in a driverless car will be more dependent on machine's awareness to avoid any road accidents, causing a full time discomfort on the road. Furthermore, there are possibilities of mishaps on the road, leaving the passenger only in trouble. Despite being a driver, the person himself is responsible for any thing happened while being in a traffic. The machine is not penaltied or hold accountable for such consequences.

As there are some guaranteed advantages to driverless vehicles, my opinion strongly approves that its drawbacks are more as compared to its benefits.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The student addresses all parts of the task by discussing both advantages and disadvantages of driverless vehicles and presents a clear position throughout, concluding that the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. Ideas are generally relevant, mentioning benefits such as independence for disabled individuals and drawbacks like a lack of emotional response and accountability. However, some arguments are slightly under-developed or vague, such as the claim regarding 'full time discomfort' and legal accountability. The reasoning is understandable, but lacks deeper elaboration on technological reliability or economic impacts. Therefore, the response aligns best with a Band 6.5 descriptor profile, fulfilling the core requirements of addressing the prompt while showing room for deeper conceptual extension.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Progression is visible, moving from an introductory stance to advantages, then disadvantages, and a final summary. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'Although', 'For instance', and 'Consequently'. However, paragraphing and referencing occasionally feel a bit mechanical or awkward, as seen in sentences like 'Consequently, there are some downsides of a remote vehicle, comparable to the one with a driver is a sense of security...'. Furthermore, cohesive links between some sentences within the body paragraphs are slightly clunky, placing this response firmly at the Band 6 level.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student attempts a reasonable range of vocabulary appropriate for the topic, including terms like 'independence', 'responsibility', 'consequences', and 'accountable'. There are, however, noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text. For example, the student uses 'feelingless operator' instead of 'unmanned system' or 'autonomous vehicle', 'penaltied' instead of 'penalised', and 'overweigh' instead of 'outweigh'. While these lexical errors and slight awkwardness do not completely impede communication, they restrict the lexical score to Band 6 due to imprecise word choices and minor word-formation slips.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as concessive clauses ('Although, a driverless vehicle is beneficial...') and relative clauses. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and punctuation slips, such as missing spaces after commas (e.g., 'cars, buses, and trucks'), the lowercase pronoun 'i', and awkward phrasing like 'the passengers will only be the ones present'. Complex structures often contain minor errors or lack completely smooth integration. Because the errors occur frequently throughout the text but rarely impede overall understanding, the performance matches the Band 6 descriptors.
