Overall5.5

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of driverless vehicles and presents a clear position. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For instance, the disadvantages section introduces several points such as job losses, technical glitches, and personal preferences regarding driving, but these points tend to remain somewhat superficial rather than fully extended. Similarly, the conclusion briefly mentions saving human lives and enhancing comfort, but these benefits would benefit from deeper elaboration to push the response into higher territory. The overall format and content successfully tackle the prompt, yet the depth of support remains uneven across the body paragraphs, keeping the development at an intermediate level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used to separate the opposing arguments effectively, moving from drawbacks to benefits. However, the progression between and within sentences is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For example, transitional phrases like 'To begin with', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' are utilized, but some cohesive devices are inaccurate, such as starting a sentence with 'However, driverless vehicles will allow...' where the connector does not fit the logical relation. Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in repetitive sentence structures and abrupt transitions, such as accidentally pasting part of the prompt into the middle of the second paragraph, which disrupts the logical flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common lexical items such as 'autonomous vehicles', 'cyber-attacks', and 'traffic congestion'. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and collocation that prevent higher achievement. Examples include 'automatic system' instead of 'automated systems', 'trucks operators' instead of 'truck operators', and awkward expressions like 'feeled boring' and 'enhancing computing comfort'. Spelling and word-formation slips occasionally surface, but they do not seriously impede overall communication, allowing the reader to follow the main arguments despite the lexical inaccuracies.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting relative clauses and conditional-style ideas. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that restrict the score. Grammatical inaccuracies include subject-verb agreement issues and tense errors, such as 'This essay will discuss about buses...', 'these automatic system rely', and 'which will reduced the traffic congestion'. There are also structural errors in dependent clauses, such as 'Some people are not interested that he drive the cars and trucks because they feeled boring and they not enjoyed the journey.' While these errors do not completely obscure the meaning, they are frequent enough to cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a limited level of grammatical control.
