Do you think the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Driverless vehicles in many countries increasingly common because of improvement of technology. In the future, individuals will likely to use these cars in their daily activities. Although this development has some disadvantages, i believe that its advantages are more significant overall.

One significant disadvantage of driverless cars is that it can cause an acceident because it designs and works base on programming and sansors. During travelling it can experience some sort of technical issues and passengers may not able to control that problem. Furthermore, it can also hit pedestrians. For instance, a driverless car is travelling on the road and due to failure in programming or in sansor,it may hit pedestrian, resulting in thier death. Therefore, heavely relying on driverless cars can lead to serious problems.

On the other hand driverless cars offers significant advantages, particularly because it can be accessable in case of emergency. This is because these vehicles are travelling without drivers and some time individuals may experience medical problem they can book driverless cars and reach the hospital on time. For example, a person has problem in their health at night by using internet they can access the driverless car and reach the hospital on time. On the other hand it is hard for them to book other car because driver may not avilable at night. As a result, Individuals do not need any drivers when they want to travel in case of emergency. These benefits are considerbaly more significant then the drwabacks that accosiated with driverless vehicles.

In conclusion, although driverless car may experience technical problems due to programming or sansors failure, I believe that its advantages outweigh these drawbacks becasue it can be accessable any time in case of an emergency and allowing people to reach their destination on time.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of driverless vehicles, leading to a clear overall position in the introduction and conclusion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and under-developed, which places it at this level. While the writer presents relevant points regarding technical failures and emergency access, the arguments are repetitious and lack deep extension with concrete real-world evidence beyond general hypotheticals. For instance, the point about emergencies is reiterated multiple times using very similar phrasing rather than expanding into broader societal impacts like traffic efficiency or economic shifts. To move to a higher band, the response would need to extend each main point with fully elaborated explanations and more varied supporting examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, maintaining an identifiable stance throughout. The writer uses basic cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion' to signal the direction of the argument. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical and referencing can be unclear, such as the pronoun 'it' frequently being used without a clear antecedent or referring ambiguously to plural nouns ('driverless cars offers... because it can be accessable'). Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate the introduction, body arguments, and conclusion, but the logical progression within paragraphs stumbles slightly due to repetitive looping of ideas. Improving referencing and employing a wider, more natural variety of transitional devices would enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating basic ideas about technology and transportation, but the range is limited. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'acceident', 'programming', and 'considerbaly', but these attempts are marred by noticeable spelling errors ('acceident', 'sansors', 'heavely', 'accessable', 'considerbaly', 'drwabacks', 'accosiated', 'becasue') and word-form inaccuracies. Additionally, there is heavy repetition of basic terms like 'driverless cars', 'hospital', and 'emergency'. While the errors do not completely impede communication, they cause some difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to incorporate a wider and more precise lexical range while eliminating spelling mistakes through careful proofreading.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The essay demonstrates a limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside a few attempts at complex forms that are frequently faulty. There are recurrent errors in verb forms, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions, such as 'cars in their daily activities' and 'it designs and works base on programming'. Articles and plurals are also handled inconsistently, as seen in 'due to failure in programming or in sansor,it may hit pedestrian'. Punctuation errors, such as missing spaces after commas, further detract from the overall control. These frequent errors require the reader to occasionally puzzle over the meaning, matching the descriptor for this level. Greater variety and control over complex sentence patterns, combined with closer attention to basic grammatical rules, are needed to progress.
