IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future all cars, buses and trucks will be driverless. The only people travelling inside these vehicles will be passengers.

Do you think the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

It is prdicted that autonomous technology will eventually control all road transport, leaving human travelers strictly as passengers. Although driverless vehicles could lead to widespread job losses in the transport sector and potential cybersecurity risks, I believe that significant reduction in traffic accidents and improve commute efficiency far outweigh these drawbacks.

On the one hand, a primary drawback of fully automated transportation is the severe economic impact on employment. Million of commercial drivers, including taxi drivers, truckers, and bus operaters, could lose their livelihood as automation replaces human labour.Furthermore, it faces the cyberattack, because completly relying on computerized systems introduces risks of technical malfunction and software hacking. If an autonomous network experience a digital glitch , it could paralyzed public transit system or cause severe accidents on a large scale.

On the other hand, the benefits offered by autonomous vehicles in terms of safety and efficiency are overwhelming. Human errors such as distracted driving, speeding, and fatigue, accounts for the vast majority of road accidents worldwide. Driverless vehicles, guided by precise sensors and artifical intelligence, eliminate human negligence, thereby drastically reducing fatal collisions and making road safer for everyone. Additionally, autonomous systems cna communicate with one another to optimize traffic flow, minimize congestion, and lower fuel consumption, making daily travel substantially faster and more environment friendly.

In conclusion, while the transition to driverless vehicles will undoubtedly create challenges regarding employment security and technological vulnerabilities, the benefits can't be overlooked. The potential to save thousands of lives through reduced accidents and to streamline global transport systems ensures that the advanteges ultimately outweigh the disadvanteges.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both the drawbacks and the benefits of driverless vehicles, presenting a clear position throughout. The writer's stance is established in the introduction and maintained until the conclusion. Main ideas are extended and supported, such as examining the economic impact on employment and contrasting it with safety and traffic efficiency advantages. However, there is a slight tendency to overgeneralise in places, preventing a higher evaluation. Ideas are relevant and thoughtfully expanded, showcasing strong coverage of the topic that meets the criteria for addressing all task requirements thoroughly.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The essay demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are coherently structured, utilizing paragraphing effectively to separate the introduction, body paragraphs focusing on drawbacks and benefits, and the conclusion. Cohesive devices are used flexibly, with appropriate transition signals such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'Additionally'. While referencing and flow are generally well-managed, minor mechanical aspects in referencing could be slightly more seamless, keeping the response at a solid level of cohesive control without reaching the highest bands.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'autonomous technology', 'livelihood', and 'optimize traffic flow'. There are, however, some spelling and word-choice errors that reflect a mid-level range, including typos like 'prdicted' instead of predicted, 'operaters' instead of operators, and 'artifical' instead of artificial. There are also occasional awkward collocations, such as 'faces the cyberattack' and 'cause severe accidents'. These errors do not impede communication, but they highlight why the response sits at a steady functional band rather than a higher tier of lexical precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an ability to construct compound and subordinate clauses effectively, such as 'Although driverless vehicles could lead to widespread job losses...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('a significant reduction', 'make road safer'), subject-verb agreement issues ('accounts for' instead of account for, 'experience' instead of experiences), and punctuation flaws involving spacing around commas. Nevertheless, these errors rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the arguments easily while revealing the typical mix of controlled and inaccurate structures associated with this band.
