IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future all cars, buses and trucks will be driverless. The only people travelling inside these vehicles will be passengers.

Do you think the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Because of the advancements in technology and emergence of artificial intelligence, there will be a time in the future when people will own driverless vehicles. Although the advantages of this include convenience and not having to learn driving, I think the disadvantages which include negative effect on health and complete reliance on machines, will outweigh them.

Automatic vehicles will make travelling more convenient and comfortable for people. People who do not know how to drive or can not drive because of the physical constraints, will also be able to travel as passengers. This will make travelling more as an attraction instead of routine. If this technology would have enough safety measures, people would lap this up completely.

People will not have to learn driving if there are driverless vehicles in the future. They would not have to pass driving test and own driving license. They would be completely dependent on machines for travelling. Because of this convenience, there is a high chance that they would be more irresponsible and careless. Any accident that might happen will be completely because of the machines and people will have to suffer because of them. They will have to be more aware about the controlling and safety measures of these technologies and it may happen that many poeple would not be able to learn them. Also, having automatic vehicles mean that they don't have to use their hand and leg movements and cognitive power. This might make them both physically as well as mentally weak.

To sum it up, the potential negative effects on physical health and cognitive ability as well as complete dependence on technology, will probably make people more irresponsible and unaware. Therefore, these challenges are more likely to outweigh the benefits of driverless vehicles, which mainly include convenience and comfort.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, successfully presenting a clear position that the disadvantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the advantages. The main ideas are relevant, covering convenience, health impacts, and reliance on technology. However, some areas are more fully developed than others, which prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. For instance, the discussion on convenience is introduced well, but the points regarding physical and mental weakness in the third paragraph are somewhat generalised and could be extended with more specific examples or clearer reasoning. The position remains clear throughout the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion, satisfying the core requirements of this level while showing partial extension of ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introduction through the body paragraphs to the conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each body paragraph focusing on a distinct theme. Cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'If this technology', and 'To sum it up' are employed to connect ideas, though cohesion is occasionally a bit mechanical or repetitive in its linking patterns. Referencing is generally clear, such as the use of 'They' and 'This' to track subjects, though occasional tracking slips mean referencing is not always completely smooth. The organisation provides a clear structure that guides the reader successfully through the arguments presented.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, providing sufficient range to discuss technology and transport with some flexibility. The student successfully attempts less common vocabulary such as 'advancements', 'artificial intelligence', 'physical constraints', and 'cognitive power'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form, such as writing 'learn driving' instead of 'learn to drive', 'pass driving test' missing an article, and 'poeple' containing a spelling error. These errors do not impede communication, and the vocabulary remains broad enough to convey the intended meaning clearly, touching on aspects of higher bands through attempts at more sophisticated terminology.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing conditionals and subordinate clauses effectively, as seen in sentences like 'If this technology would have enough safety measures...' and 'Although the advantages of this include...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('pass driving test'), slight tense inaccuracies ('would have' instead of 'has'), and minor punctuation lapses. Crucially, these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear throughout. The control of grammar shows a solid foundation of simple structures combined with partially successful attempts at complex sentence patterns.
