Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is an undeniable fact that in the future all cars, buses and trucks will become driverless, and the only people using vehicles would be passsengers. This essay will highlight both the advantages and disadvantages alongside my personal opinion regarding the matter with a logical conclusion.
To commence with, In recent years, there have been substantial breakthroughs in technology that will continue into the future. Furthermore, with the onset of artificial intelligence, it is entirely possible that by the next decade, vehicles would be driven by AI models and become completely driverless, requiring no human assistance to travel. This would have several benefits for the general population, people would be able to accomplish different tasks while sitting inside of their vehicles, without worring about the traffic on the road. In addition, public transport will become more common due to AI drivers, thus, decreasing pollution and carbon emmision levels as most people will travel on public buses. This may also reduce the risk of human negligence, that is the culprit behind 90 percent of road accidents. Secondly, The drawbacks and disadvantages of driverless vehicles should not be ignored, wil AI driving vehicles, the will be no need for traditional human drivers, leading to mass unemployment, as all transport today, is handled by human drivers. The governemt will have to figure out a way to bring new jobs for human drivers. Also, AI is a developing sector that needs a substantial amount of funding to attain the level of precision, that is needed to drive vehicles without human supervision. Moving ahead, a technical or intelligence failure could prove to be a massive hazard and can cause accidents.
However, I personally believe that the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages. To support this claim, the shift to driverless vehicles would reduce pollution dramatically and will greatly improve air quality. It will also decrease the amount of vehicles on the street as most people will start using public transport. The migration from personal vehicles to public transport will reduce emissions, lessen the strain on the manufacturing industry, decrease oil demands due to the low number of perosnal cars on roads. Humans will also be able to spend more time on productive tasks, while an AI driver takes them to their respective destinations.
In conclusion, if the technology industry can overcome all the hurdles and train AI models to safely drive cars on various terrain, Driverless vehicles are extremely feasible in the near future.

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|
| Task Achievement / Task Response | 6.0 |
| Coherence and Cohesion | 5.5 |
| Lexical Resource | 6.0 |
| Grammatical Range and Accuracy | 5.5 |
| Overall | 6.0 |
Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of driverless vehicles and presents a clear position throughout. Note that 17 words copied directly from the prompt were not counted towards the overall total. While the ideas are relevant, some are more fully developed than others. For instance, the benefits regarding productivity and public transport are extended, whereas the points regarding job losses and the need for funding in the second paragraph are somewhat limited and under-developed. To reach a higher level, every main idea requires thorough explanation, concrete examples, and extended reasoning rather than brief assertions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical progression, moving from an introduction to arguments for both sides, a personal stance in the third paragraph, and a clear conclusion. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. There is an over-reliance on transitional phrases like 'To commence with' and 'Moving ahead', and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the dangling phrase 'wil AI driving vehicles, the will be no need'. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion within paragraphs could be smoother. To improve, you should use a wider variety of cohesive devices more naturally without relying on repetitive formulas.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task and attempts less common lexical items such as 'artificial intelligence', 'human negligence', and 'mass unemployment'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'passsengers', 'worring', 'emmision', 'wil AI driving', 'governemt', and 'perosnal'. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they reflect a lack of precision in spelling and collocations. To achieve a higher band, you need to demonstrate greater accuracy in spelling and use less common vocabulary with better stylistic control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like conditional clauses and relative clauses effectively. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as comma splices ('To commence with, In recent years...', '...thus, decreasing pollution...'), run-on clauses, and article usage, but these errors rarely impede communication. The control of verb tenses is generally acceptable when discussing future predictions. To progress to a higher band, you should aim to increase the proportion of error-free complex sentences and ensure tighter punctuation control across all paragraphs.
