Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task only partially, fulfilling the requirement of discussing both advantages and disadvantages, but the position is not always clearly sustained. The ideas presented are rather limited and under-developed. For example, while the student mentions that driverless vehicles will improve efficiency and productivity, this point is not fully extended with strong supporting examples, relying instead on vague assertions about humans being confused or stressed during driving. Similarly, the counterargument concerning accidents is introduced simply as a risk without deep exploration of causes such as software failures or legal liability. Furthermore, nine words copied directly from the prompt were not counted toward the minimum length requirement. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to present fully developed ideas with robust, specific explanations and examples for both sides of the argument.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

There is a coherent overall arrangement, and the essay is clearly divided into an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty and mechanical, reflecting a tendency to rely on basic connectors. For instance, transitional phrases like 'Another important advantage is that' and 'Despite these advantages' are used, but referencing within and between sentences is not always completely clear. Pronoun use is occasionally confusing, and the progression of ideas lacks smooth transitions, particularly in the conclusion where sentences become tangled. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to structure the response, but to achieve a higher score, the writer must employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure that referencing is consistently clear throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used represents a limited and minimally adequate range for the task. The student attempts to use some less common items, such as 'productivity', 'budget friendly', and 'debased', but these attempts are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and spelling. For instance, words like 'brawbacks' (drawbacks), 'postive' (positive), and 'significent' (significant) demonstrate spelling inaccuracies, while phrases like 'escalate the risk of accident' show awkward lexical combinations. Although the reader can generally grasp the intended meaning, these frequent lexical slips cause some difficulty. To improve in this criterion, the writer needs to expand their range of vocabulary, pay closer attention to spelling and word forms, and use less common terms with greater precision and stylistic awareness.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside frequent attempts at complex sentences that are often faulty. There are persistent errors in verb forms, tenses, subject-verb agreement, and articles throughout the text. Examples include 'In future the increasing use of vehicles... will be a passenger', 'While it offer a several advantages, but it also bring', and 'sometime machine or system make blunder and do not work their properly'. These frequent errors require the reader to decode the meaning and can cause noticeable difficulty. To move up to the next level, the writer must demonstrate better control over basic grammatical patterns, improve punctuation, and ensure that complex sentence structures are constructed accurately with correct agreement and verb tenses.
