Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt partially, exploring both advantages and disadvantages of driverless vehicles and concluding that the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. However, the development of ideas remains limited and under-developed. For instance, the discussion on safety benefits and the rise in unemployment relies on superficial reasoning rather than fully extended points. The position is stated but lacks the consistent clarity and depth required to move higher, as sentences such as 'the public want to more easy and rapidly way' fail to build a robust, persuasive argument. To reach the next level, the writer needs to provide more thorough explanations, supported by concrete and well-explained examples rather than generalized statements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is some basic organization present, with an introduction, body paragraphs addressing pros and cons, and a conclusion. However, there is no clear overall progression of ideas, and the logical flow is frequently disrupted by awkward transitions and mechanical or inaccurate use of cohesive devices, such as 'To commence with' and 'Moreover'. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion is weak, and referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in the ambiguous pronoun use in the concluding paragraph. To improve Coherence and Cohesion, the writer must ensure that sentences flow naturally from one to the next using accurate linking words, and that each paragraph focuses on a single, well-linked central theme.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary items, such as 'autonomous vehicles' and 'unemployment', but these are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and word formation, such as 'reduce the accidents', 'distaintion', and 'unemployment numbers went up'. Spelling errors like 'convient', 'erorr', and 'faint' (implied fail) also occur. These errors cause some difficulty for the reader and restrict the score. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to expand their lexical repertoire, pay closer attention to natural word partnerships, and ensure correct word forms and spelling throughout the essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer uses a very limited range of sentence structures, and attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, leading to frequent errors. There are persistent issues with subject-verb agreement, article usage, and prepositions within grammatical patterns, such as 'drivers has to work', 'impact on his health', and 'disadvantages outweigh on advantages'. Punctuation is also problematic, with incorrect spacing around commas and missing terminal punctuation in places. These frequent grammatical errors cause strain and difficulty for the reader. To progress, the writer should practice forming reliable complex sentences, master basic verb and subject agreements, and refine punctuation control.
