IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future all cars, buses and trucks will be driverless. The only people travelling inside these vehicles will be passengers.

Do you think the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the future, vehicles such as cars, buses and trucks will drive without a driver. The only individuals who travel are the passengers inside. In this essay I will write about possible advantages and disadvantages and will explain why the benefits do not outweigh the drawbacks.

On the one hand, if there are no drivers inside a vehicle, there will be no potential disputes between drivers and customers because every passanger just get in the vehicle, sits down and is quiet. This would probably lead to a calmer athmosphere and passengers will be at their destination faster.

Another argument is that drivers are human-beings and no machines. Individuals get tired, have stress or personal difficulties which reflect on their way of driving. In order to prevent potential harm to passengers and the driver himself, it is beneficial for vehicles to be driverless. In addition, the vehicle could drive at day and night, without needing a rest. Therefore, delays are prevented.

On the other hand, driverless vehicles cannot ensure that rules are followed. That means that every individual inside a vehicle can be harmed or bullied. To give an example, if a school class drives every morning to school by bus, they can be very noisy and disturbing to other passengers. This would lead to more annoyed and unsatisfied individuals.

Furthermore, many people or in particular drivers, will lose their occupation if vehicles are driverless in the future and may lose their livelihood. This would be negative for a society's economy because truck or bus drivers take a crucial part in economy.

To conclude, it is unsure if driverless vehicles are more beneficial in the future or not. Even though, delays and fights may become fewer, if there are no controlled rules or people who will lose their jobs, this would affect a society and its people negatively. From my perspective, the benefits do not outweigh the drawbacks yet.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both sides of the question and state a clear view in the introduction and conclusion: the benefits do not outweigh the drawbacks. Your points about reduced driver fatigue, fewer delays, passenger behaviour and job losses are relevant. However, some ideas are developed more fully than others. The fatigue point explains why automation could reduce harm, but the claim that passengers will reach destinations faster is not supported. The example of a noisy school bus illustrates a possible problem, yet it does not fully explain how driverless technology itself causes bullying or how this risk could be managed. Develop each point with a clearer explanation or a specific example, and make the comparison between the overall benefits and disadvantages more explicit.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for advantages and disadvantages, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “To conclude” makes the progression easy to follow. This coherent arrangement meets the lower-band expectations, and the paragraphing is generally effective. To make the flow more flexible and precise, avoid relying mainly on formulaic transitions such as “Another argument” and “Furthermore.” Some links between claims could also be clearer: for example, the move from driver fatigue to vehicles operating day and night would benefit from an explicit explanation of how continuous operation reduces delays. Ensure references such as “this” clearly identify the idea being discussed.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary to discuss the topic, including “potential disputes,” “personal difficulties,” “livelihood,” and “crucial part in economy.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and the meaning remains clear despite some inaccurate or unnatural expressions. There are also spelling errors, including “passanger” and “athmosphere,” and some collocations are awkward, such as “take a crucial part in economy.” Aim for more precise, natural phrasing and check spelling carefully. For instance, “passengers” and “atmosphere” are the correct spellings, while “play a crucial role in the economy” is a more idiomatic way to express the final point.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional structures such as “if there are no drivers inside a vehicle” and a relative clause in “Individuals get tired, have stress or personal difficulties which reflect on their way of driving.” Most sentences communicate their meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “every passanger just get in the vehicle, sits down and is quiet” has a subject–verb agreement problem and inconsistent verb forms; “every passenger just gets in … and sits down” would be more accurate. In “Even though, delays and fights may become fewer,” the concessive clause is punctuated and structured incorrectly. Review agreement, parallel verb forms, and the construction of dependent clauses to improve accuracy while retaining this range.
