IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future all cars, buses and trucks will be driverless. The only people travelling inside these vehicles will be passengers.

Do you think the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is predicted that all road transport will be fully autonomous in future and humans will only be passengers. I believe the advantages of this development are far more than its disadvantages.

The main advantage of these driverless vehicals is a significant improvement in road safety. Human errors like drunk drive, fatigue and over speeding is responsible for 90% of accidents. Autonomous vehicals, equipped with sensors, cameras and artificial inteligence, do not get tired or distracted and reach much faster then human. For example a self driving truck can detect a pedestrian at night in milliseconds and apply brakes instantly. Furthermore, driverless technology will improve traffic efficiency and convenience.

Passengers can use travel time productively to work, read or rest while computer controlled traffic flow will reduce congestion and fuel consumption. For elderly and disabled people who cannot drive, driverless cars will provide new independence.

On the other hand there are notable disadvantages. The most serious is mass unemployment. Milloins of people world wide work as car, buses and truck drivers and they would lose there job. This could lead to serious social and economic problems, especially in developing country like Pakistan where driving is amain source of income.Another concern is safety related to technology failure and hacking. If the software malfuntions, it could cause catastrophic accidents.

In conclusion, although job losses and technological risks are legitimate concerns that government must plan for through retraining and strong cybersecurity laws, the benefits of driverless transport in terms of saving lives, reducing traffic and increasing productivity are much greater. Therefore, i think the advantages clearly outweigh the disadvantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your position is clear from the introduction and maintained in the conclusion: you argue that the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. You address both sides with relevant points, including improved safety, more efficient travel, greater independence for people unable to drive, unemployment, and cybersecurity risks. The example of a truck detecting a pedestrian helps illustrate the safety argument, while the reference to drivers in Pakistan makes the employment concern more concrete. Most ideas are extended with explanation, although the traffic-efficiency and convenience point is less developed than the safety and job-loss arguments. To strengthen the response further, explain more precisely how autonomous vehicles would reduce congestion or fuel use, and support broad claims such as the accident figure with a clear qualification or source.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear overall progression: an introduction states your view, separate sections present benefits and drawbacks, and the conclusion weighs them and restates your position. Paragraphing is appropriate, and signposts such as “Furthermore,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” make the argument easy to follow. The ideas within each section are generally ordered logically, moving from safety to efficiency and then to social risks. Some connections could be made more explicit: the sentence about traffic efficiency ends abruptly before the next paragraph develops its consequences, and the transition from convenience to accessibility could be smoother. Use linking phrases selectively and connect each claim to its explanation so the progression feels less like a list.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “autonomous,” “sensors,” “traffic efficiency,” “mass unemployment,” and “cybersecurity,” which helps communicate the main ideas. However, spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural word combinations are noticeable and limit the accuracy and range of your vocabulary. Examples include “vehicals,” “artifical inteligence,” “drunk drive,” “reach much faster,” and “there job.” Some expressions are also too broad, such as “serious social and economic problems,” where a more specific description would be more effective. Build accuracy by checking spelling carefully and learning common collocations for transport and employment. More precise vocabulary would make your arguments sound clearer and more controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional clause (“If the software malfunctions, it could cause catastrophic accidents”) and a relative clause (“people who cannot drive”). Most sentences remain understandable, and the overall meaning is clear. Some grammatical errors occur, particularly with agreement, articles, plurals, and sentence boundaries. For example, “Human errors … is responsible” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “a main source” needs a space and “in developing country” needs an article or plural form. The sentence beginning “Passengers can use travel time productively” also joins several ideas without a clear boundary. Review agreement and article use, and punctuate longer sentences carefully to improve accuracy while retaining your range of structures.
