IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future all cars, buses and trucks will be driverless. The only people travelling inside these vehicles will be passengers.

Do you think the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the coming A.I era, numerous modes of transportation such as buses and heavy duty trucks will be operating on their own without the help of operators. The only human being will be a travellers who are seated inside. I think the drawbacks of this trend will exceed the benefits. In this essay I will provide reasons to support my statement.

To begin with, Driverless car cannot be operate to all the places. By these I mean only fewer country is ready for this transformation, many places still lacks a good condition of road, does not follow basic rules of traffic and charging facilities . In these type of places auto operated cars or trucks will be a huge failure. for example, countries like Afghanistan or Pakistan where there aren't enough paved roads and lacks basic electric system and due to their condition economically it will be hard for them to make changes as it is costlier. Therefore, It is impossible to follow these type of trend in such countries even in coming decades.

Another key factor is that machines lacks accountability and instant decision making. To elaborate, during disaster movement only human are capable enough make certain type of decision rather then automatic cars and whom can we blame as it uses a standard software. To illustrate, If someone is crossing the road and if it operated by human being then maybe we will take instant decision and can change the direction of vehicle while machines will only try to stop the vehicle.

To conclude, I believe that cars, buses or trucks will be driverless, there will be more disadvantage. This is primary because It can only operated on certain location where everything is available and machine's judgement capacity is less in compare to humans.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction—“the drawbacks … will exceed the benefits”—and remains consistent in the conclusion. You address the question with two relevant disadvantages: limited infrastructure in some countries and the difficulty of machine decision-making in emergencies. The examples of Afghanistan and Pakistan help illustrate the first point, while the pedestrian scenario supports the second. However, the discussion is unevenly developed: the infrastructure argument includes several details, whereas the emergency example is brief and does not explain why a driverless vehicle would necessarily fail to respond safely. The advantages are not explored, so the comparison implied by “outweigh” is limited. Develop the counterargument and explain more precisely how each disadvantage affects passengers or society.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting separate reasons, and a conclusion that restates your view. Paragraphing is appropriate, and signposts such as “To begin with,” “Another key factor,” and “To conclude” make the progression easy to follow. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some of the clearer progression associated with a stronger performance. However, linking is sometimes mechanical, and a few references are unclear—for example, “By these I mean” does not point smoothly to the preceding claim. The second body paragraph also moves quickly from accountability to decision-making and then to a pedestrian example. Use more precise referencing and connect each example explicitly to the paragraph’s main claim.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate your main ideas, including “driverless,” “charging facilities,” “accountability,” and “standard software.” There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “transformation” and “instant decision making.” However, the range is limited and several word-choice or collocation problems make the writing less natural, including “disaster movement,” “a huge failure,” and “machine’s judgement capacity.” Some expressions are repeated, particularly references to “these type of” places or trends. Aim for more precise transport and safety vocabulary, and check whether words combine naturally. For example, describe “emergency situations” rather than “disaster movement,” and refer to a vehicle’s “decision-making ability” rather than its “judgement capacity.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a conditional example beginning “If someone is crossing the road,” and you use linking clauses to explain your reasoning. The overall meaning is generally recoverable, but grammatical control is inconsistent. Errors include subject–verb agreement in “Driverless car cannot be operate” and “machines lacks,” incorrect verb forms in “can be operate,” and article or number problems in “a travellers.” Some longer sentences are difficult to follow, especially the sentence about disaster situations and accountability, where clause structure is incomplete. Work on agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence boundaries. Building accurate shorter sentences first, then combining them with controlled subordinate clauses, will make your arguments clearer.
