IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future all cars, buses and trucks will be driverless. The only people travelling inside these vehicles will be passengers.
Do you think the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Diverless vehicles expected to become a common mode of transportation worldwide, as all the buses, cars and trucks will operate without a driver. This technological development could significantly change the way people travel. In my opinion, they have more advantages than disadvantages.
Road Safety is one of the biggest advantages of diverless vehicles because diverless vehicles help to reduce road accidents that are caused by human error. For instance, People sometimes fail to obey rules such as overtaking dangerously which can endager their safety, but when a machine operates a car, it is often careful when overtaking the other vehicles. Therefore, i believe that automated systems can follow rules more strictly than humans, it helps reduce serious accidents.
Furthermore, diverless vehicles can use sensors and computer systems to detect obstacles and respond quickly to changing road conditions. This may help prevent collisions caused by distracted driving or delayed reactions. Consequently, passengers could travel more safely, and the number of road accidents might decrease.
On the other hand, diverless vehicles may have some disadvantages because they depend on technology, which can sometimes malfunction. For instance, a software failure or sensor problem could cause road accidents and put passengers at risk. Moreover, the widespread use of these vehicle could lead to job losses among professional drivers. As a result, some people may face financial difficulties.
In conclusion, although diverless vehicles may cause technical problems and unemployment, I believe their advantages outweigh their disadvantages because they can improve road safety and make traveling more convinient.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear from the introduction—driverless vehicles have “more advantages than disadvantages”—and is reaffirmed in the conclusion. You address both sides with relevant points: reduced human error and faster responses are weighed against technical failures and job losses. The road-safety points are supported with examples, including dangerous overtaking and sensor detection, so the response meets the task well. To make the discussion more fully developed, explain the consequences or likelihood of the disadvantages in greater depth, and clarify why the safety benefits outweigh them—for example, how failures could be managed or how displaced drivers might be supported. Some ideas are therefore more developed than others, while the overall argument remains relevant and clear.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two paragraphs developing benefits, a paragraph on disadvantages, and a conclusion. The progression from the general safety benefit to specific technology, then to counterarguments, is easy to follow. Linking expressions such as “Furthermore,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help signal these stages. However, some connections are mechanical, and the two safety paragraphs overlap rather than building a clearly distinct line of reasoning. The sentence beginning “Therefore” also joins two complete ideas with a comma, which weakens the link between them. To improve progression, make each paragraph’s purpose more distinct and use referencing or transitions that show how each point develops the previous one.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “human error,” “sensors,” “software failure,” “road conditions,” and “professional drivers.” These choices make the main ideas clear, and some phrases, such as “delayed reactions,” are appropriate to the discussion. However, spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “Diverless” is repeated instead of “driverless,” “endager” appears for “endanger,” and “convinient” for “convenient.” There are also awkward or imprecise expressions, such as “a common mode of transportation worldwide” and “when a machine operates a car.” Check spelling carefully and choose more natural collocations, such as “operate autonomously” or “the widespread adoption of these vehicles.” This would make the vocabulary more controlled and precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a reason clause (“because they depend on technology”) and a relative clause (“accidents that are caused by human error”). Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the argument remains understandable. Some grammatical and punctuation errors persist, however. In “Therefore, i believe … than humans, it helps reduce,” the pronoun should be capitalised and the comma joins two independent clauses; separate them or use a conjunction. “The widespread use of these vehicle” has a plural agreement error, and “Road Safety” is unnecessarily capitalised mid-sentence. There are also missing spaces after full stops, as in “driver.This.” Review sentence boundaries, agreement, capitalisation, and punctuation to improve accuracy while retaining your range of structures.
