IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future all cars, buses and trucks will be driverless. The only people travelling inside these vehicles will be passengers.

Do you think the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the coming decades, all transport vehicles including private cars, public transport buses and goods transportation will operate without the assistance of a man and the people in these vehicles will be only commuters. I largely believe that autonomous vehicles have more advantages than of transport system dependent on a human being.

The developments in technology have made it possible for people to travel alone without driving the car or a bus. The biggest drawback of this innovation is that it runs on pre installed programs and act according to that manuals. That means in case of a sudden emergency or change of plan, vehicle will not stop until it reach its assigned station. For example, if a passanger wanted to get off the vehicle before is intended stop, he may not be able to avail this service because most of the buses have stays on station to station. As a result, commuters may face inconvenience. Furthermore, this technology is still in development phase and is subjected to errors. Thus, in case of a malfunction, it can lead to devastating outcomes. Take the example of autonomous orange line train incident in Lahore, the train doors have software glitch and all the passengers were stuck there for several hours, causing panic situation among them. There, these short comings make the system less trustable.

However, driverless cars and buses have a range of benefits which makes puts them on an edge. It eliminates the need of a human, which means we can travel at any time of the day to any location. This is particularly important because human needs a rest after a journey of few hours while these vehicles can continue to operate for days or even weeks. As a result, they save a crucial time and people can utilize it for other tasks. Besides that, they largely benefits those individuals without driving skils. They can save significant amount of money which they have to pay for a driver. For Instance, people can make a one time invest on the purchase of a driverless car and use it their own, instead of a personal driver. Consequently, these causes put this technology on an edge as compared to others.

In conclusion, although driverless cars have some limitations, I believe its time saving and less operational cost outweigh its disadvantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you believe driverless vehicles offer greater benefits, and the conclusion restates this view. You address both sides with relevant points, including software failures and passenger inconvenience as disadvantages, and time savings and reduced reliance on paid drivers as advantages. The Lahore train example helps illustrate the risks. However, some points are not fully explained: the claim that a vehicle would not stop in an emergency is broad, and the example about getting off before a scheduled stop is not clearly tied to driverless technology. The benefits are also somewhat general. To strengthen the response, explain how automation specifically produces each benefit and develop one or two examples more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on disadvantages, a paragraph on advantages, and a conclusion. The contrast signalled by “However” is effective, and phrases such as “As a result” help show cause and effect. This gives the argument a coherent progression. At times, though, connections are mechanical or the reference is unclear. For example, “There, these short comings” does not clearly identify what “there” refers to, while “these causes” in the advantages paragraph is an imprecise summary. Some ideas within the paragraphs could also be ordered more tightly. Use clearer references and link each example directly to the point it supports to make the progression smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “autonomous vehicles,” “malfunction,” “commuters,” and “operational cost.” These choices allow you to discuss both practical benefits and safety concerns, and several less common terms are attempted. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “less trustable,” “put them on an edge,” and “one time invest.” There are also spelling errors, including “passanger,” “skils,” and “short comings.” These do not generally prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and control. Aim to learn common word partnerships and check spelling and word forms carefully; more natural phrasing would make your argument sound clearer and more assured.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including conditional and cause-and-effect structures, as in “in case of a malfunction, it can lead to devastating outcomes.” The main ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur across the response. Examples include “it runs … and act” (subject–verb agreement), “until it reach” (verb form), and “a passanger wanted to get off … before is intended stop” (missing or incorrect grammatical elements). There are also problems with articles, plurals, and sentence construction, as in “human needs a rest” and “a panic situation.” Greater accuracy with agreement, articles, and complete sentence patterns would improve control. Proofread each sentence for its subject and verb, then check that required articles and possessives are present.
