IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future all cars, buses and trucks will be driverless. The only people travelling inside these vehicles will be passengers.

Do you think the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Many people are of the opinion that all types of vehicles will be without drivers in the future. Only the passengers will be travelling inside these vehicles. Although it would have certain drawbacks for the people travelling, the advantages of reduction in road accidents and flexibility for a person outweigh these disadvantages.

There is the major problem of the occurrence of road accidents, specifically at night, because of the carelessness and sleepiness of drivers. This has incurred financial loss to people as well as their lives. With the introduction of smart driverless vehicles, this problem will be solved, as without drivers, the chances of accidents are minimal. For example, Tesla is manufacturing driverless trucks that will coordinate with other vehicles, preventing fatalities and losses. In addition, a person can easily complete his office work and do something useful instead of driving, which increases productivity and growth.

Apart from the advantages of these technological advancements, some drawbacks of driverless vehicles will be difficult to handle. Many drivers will be unemployed with the introduction of driverless cars. Similarly, driverless vehicles will be sometimes inaccurate. To reach a desired location for a passenger, it needs proper research and trials before launching it in a market. Moreover, these vehicles need to establish the connection with other vehicles on the road in order to reach on time, without making errors and timing problems. For instance, a Japanese company has introduced the driverless car for consumers, but it takes around 1 hour to reach a journey of 20 minutes. Therefore, these disadvantages must be carried out appropriately to avoid the damage.

In conclusion, although unemployment of drivers and inaccuracy in maps will be dangerous for people in the future, the driverless vehicles will significantly reduce accidents and loss of lives, allowing a person to perform productive tasks without driving.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your position is clear throughout: you argue that reduced accidents and greater productivity outweigh unemployment and technical inaccuracies. You address both sides and support the main benefits with explanations, including the example of driverless trucks coordinating with other vehicles. This fits the descriptor because the ideas are relevant and generally extended, rather than simply listed. To strengthen the response further, develop the disadvantages with the same precision: unemployment is mentioned but its likely scale or consequences are not explained, while the Japanese-car example is difficult to assess without identifying the company or clarifying the cause of the delay. Explain more directly why the benefits outweigh these particular costs.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear four-paragraph structure, moving from your position to advantages, disadvantages and a conclusion. The progression is easy to follow, and signposts such as “In addition,” “Similarly” and “In conclusion” help readers recognise the relationships between points. This is a logical and coherent organisation. Some linking is a little formulaic, however, and the relationship between ideas could be made more precise. For example, “Therefore, these disadvantages must be carried out appropriately” does not clearly connect the preceding technical problems to a practical response. Use a more exact transition and explain what should be done, such as testing systems thoroughly before deployment. Clearer referencing would also help distinguish the vehicles from the technology or maps being discussed.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “driverless vehicles,” “fatalities,” “productivity,” “unemployed” and “inaccuracy.” These choices make the central ideas clear, and you attempt some less common expressions. However, several word combinations are imprecise or unnatural, which limits the flexibility and control expected at a stronger level. For instance, “this has incurred financial loss to people as well as their lives” does not express the intended consequences naturally, and “the disadvantages must be carried out appropriately” uses an unsuitable verb. “A journey of 20 minutes” is also less natural in this context than “a 20-minute journey.” Aim to learn vocabulary in accurate collocations and choose words that express the intended relationship precisely.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including a concessive opening (“Although it would have certain drawbacks…”) and a reason clause beginning “because of.” Most sentences communicate their meaning, and the conclusion restates your position clearly. Some grammatical errors remain, while the range is not yet consistently controlled. For example, “it needs proper research and trials before launching it” shifts awkwardly between the vehicle and the action of launching; “before it is launched” would make the structure clearer. In “a person can… instead of driving, which increases productivity,” the reference of “which” is ambiguous. Practise maintaining clear subjects and references in longer sentences, and check article use and sentence construction during revision.
