In the future all cars, buses and trucks will be driverless. The only people travelling inside these vehicles will be passengers.

Do you think the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In the upcoming generation, transportation vehicles like trucks , buses and cars are going to be automated. In addition, there will be only passengers inside that vehicles. I think the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages. Though, the automated system can be malfunctioning but, it would be best for transportation companies to transport their heavy load without any driver.

Firstly, In the driverless vehicles, many types of sencers are available on the upper body of the vehicles and when the sencers are in glitch mode, there is no way left to stop the vehicle thenafter some big crashes or accidents may happen on the road because of the malfunctioning of sencers. In these case somebody can die as well. For instance a tesla car had faced some technical glitches on the road of abu dhabi. In that accident two passengers lost their lives including driver. Though sometimes technical glitches happens but, it can be reduced by using more advance technology.

On the other hand, it is a big revolution in transportation companies which relies on transporting. When they use these type of vehiles their costs of driver becomes lower and that savings they can use in growth of their company. Sometimes, such drivers drives their vehicles in sleepy mode or drank mode and they causes big crashes. by using automated driving system the number of accidents that happen on road can be decrease. for example, in the 2020, an increasing number of tesla car on the roads of california results in lower number of accidents on the same road compared to 2010.

In conclusion, vehicles without human control can create disaster due to some technical glitches or malfunctioning of system, but, there is more advantages in social lifestyle and huge transportation companies as they can run their driverless vehicles without any driver or an employe behind it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you believe the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, and you address both sides by discussing technical failures and the potential benefits for transport companies and road safety. The examples about a Tesla crash and accident rates in California are relevant, but they are asserted briefly and without enough explanation or support, so the reasoning remains under-developed. The opening also focuses on companies’ ability to move heavy loads, while the conclusion refers more broadly to social benefits; these points could be connected more clearly to the question. To strengthen the response, explain how automation may reduce human error and why that benefit outweighs the risks of system failure, using carefully explained examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, a paragraph on disadvantages, a paragraph on advantages, and a conclusion. The contrast signalled by “Firstly” and “On the other hand” helps readers follow the two sides. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear: the first body paragraph moves from sensors to possible deaths and then to a specific crash without fully explaining the links. Connectors such as “Though” and “but” are also used awkwardly or repeatedly, and references such as “that vehicles” make it harder to identify what is being discussed. Organise each paragraph around one main claim, then explain and illustrate it in a clear sequence, using linking phrases selectively.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “automated,” “technical glitches,” “transportation companies,” and “malfunctioning,” which helps communicate the main ideas. However, the range is limited and several word-choice, collocation, and spelling problems make the writing less precise. For example, “sencers” is misspelled, “drank mode” is not an appropriate expression, and “costs of driver becomes lower” does not express the intended idea naturally. Repetition of “vehicles,” “driver,” and “big” also limits variety. Build a more accurate set of topic phrases and check spelling and collocations; for instance, describe “driver costs” falling and drivers operating “while intoxicated” rather than using the current wording.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a concession with “Though” and a conditional clause beginning “when.” However, complex structures are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences difficult to read. Examples include “there will be only passengers inside that vehicles,” “In these case somebody can die,” and “the number of accidents … can be decrease.” Subject–verb agreement, articles, plurals, and verb forms need particular attention. Punctuation and capitalisation are also inconsistent, as in “Firstly, In” and “by using.” Practise building accurate sentences with one main clause and a subordinate clause, then check agreement and verb forms before adding further complexity.
