IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future all cars, buses and trucks will be driverless. The only people travelling inside these vehicles will be passengers.

Do you think the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 4.5)

The advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages because they will drastically cut road accidents caused by human error, save millions of productive hours, and improve traffic flow, despite valid concerns over job losses for professional drivers and cybersecurity risks. Autonomous systems do not get tired, drunk, or distracted. Trials, such as self-driving buses in Singapore, logged thousands of accident-free kilometers. More Free Time: Passengers can work, read, or rest instead of focusing on the road. Automated platooning and smart routing reduce fuel use and traffic jams.

In the future all cars ,buses and truks will be driverless because the rebort take human work like this. The rebort driving inside these vehicles will be passenger. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You state a clear view in the opening sentence: the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, and you identify safety, saved time and improved traffic as benefits. You also acknowledge job losses and cybersecurity, so the response is relevant to both sides of the question. However, these points are mostly asserted rather than explained: for example, the Singapore trial is mentioned without showing what it demonstrates about safety, and the disadvantages are not developed. The later paragraph becomes unclear and does not directly compare the overall benefits and costs. The response is 144 words, below the required 250 words; the eight words copied from the prompt are excluded. Develop each main point with explanation or a specific example, and conclude by reinforcing your comparison.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

The opening sentence gives the reader a useful central position, and the first section groups several relevant benefits together. However, the response has no clear paragraph structure or sustained progression: it moves from safety to free time and traffic, then shifts to a loosely connected paragraph about robots and travel. The label “More Free Time” interrupts the prose rather than functioning as a developed paragraph or a clear linking device. Connections between claims are also limited, and the final sentence does not provide a conclusion to the argument. Organise the essay into an introduction, separate paragraphs for advantages and disadvantages, and a conclusion. Use clear links to show how each example supports your position.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant topic vocabulary effectively, including “driverless vehicles,” “human error,” “cybersecurity risks,” “automated platooning” and “smart routing.” These choices show an ability to discuss the subject beyond very basic terms. However, the later paragraph contains frequent spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural expressions, such as “truks,” “rebort,” “treveling” and “the human lifre it easy.” These make parts of the meaning difficult to follow. Some phrases, including “reach in one mintue and one second,” do not express a clear or realistic benefit. Check spelling carefully and choose precise collocations; for example, explain that passengers can use travel time productively rather than saying time “can't waste.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response includes a few controlled sentence forms. The opening sentence uses a complex structure with “because” and “despite,” and “Autonomous systems do not get tired, drunk, or distracted” is a clear, accurate simple sentence. However, the range is limited overall, and several later sentences have errors that make their meaning difficult to understand. For instance, “The rebort driving inside these vehicles will be passenger” has an unclear subject and faulty sentence structure, while “The time can't waste in treveling” lacks a grammatical construction for expressing that time is not wasted. Practise building complete sentences with clear subjects and verbs, and check articles, agreement and punctuation. Aim to explain each idea in a full sentence before adding more complex clauses.
