Do you think the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the world of mordernization, technology has developed to that extent where the automobiles now do not need a driver for it to drive.

I believe that this technology could have ample amount of advantages, rather than disadvantages. As we know that artificial intelligence has developed to that extent where it can drive cars on its own. For example, Elon Musk the founder of Tesla, developed a car where the driver just gives the command and the car can drive, reach to the destination and park by itself. This has made the lives of the consumers very easy where they do not have to worry about reaching the destination or taking a wrong route, because the car already knows it. There are cases where people who drive cars by themselves get more into accidents comapred with automated cars. For instance, people who are not physicaly able to drive in conditions like intoxication, parkinsons these are some scenarios where the person cannot drive on their own, but this is where automated cars help around.

There are some disadvantages regarding these concept too, as it is technology there is no sureity about when it may malfunction. There has been a case where the automatic car malfunctioned and caused an accident and the person who was there a s passenger was severly injured. Along with that the maintainence of these high priced cars is no piece of cake, therefore to take care and make sure there is no tenchnical problem one has to be financially strong too.

To conclude I would say mordernization is inevitable hence the development of technology is going to continue, we just have to make sure about avoiding the tiny errors which could cost lives.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: you believe the benefits of driverless vehicles outweigh the drawbacks, and you address both sides of the question. The advantages are supported with relevant examples, including easier travel for passengers and potential help for people unable to drive; you also acknowledge malfunction risks and high maintenance costs. This covers the task well, while the explanation of some points is less developed than others. For example, the Tesla example describes convenience but does not explain how this benefit compares in importance with the risks. The claim that automated cars cause fewer accidents also needs clearer support. To strengthen the response further, explain why the advantages overall outweigh the disadvantages and develop each example with more precise reasoning.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on advantages, one on disadvantages, and a conclusion. The progression from benefits to risks is easy to follow, and phrases such as “For example,” “Along with that,” and “To conclude” help signal relationships between ideas. However, some linking is mechanical, and a few references are unclear. In “this is where automated cars help around,” the connection to the preceding examples is not expressed precisely; similarly, “these concept” does not clearly refer to the technology or the vehicles. Improve cohesion by using more exact references and by linking each example explicitly to the main claim, rather than relying mainly on signposting phrases.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of vocabulary, including “artificial intelligence,” “malfunction,” “automated cars,” and “financially strong,” which allows you to discuss both benefits and risks. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “modernization is inevitable.” However, word choice and collocation are sometimes inaccurate or awkward, as in “ample amount of advantages,” “gives the command,” and “help around.” Spelling errors such as “mordernization,” “comapred,” “physicaly,” and “maintainence” are noticeable and reduce precision. Aim for accurate, natural combinations and proofread carefully. More precise terms for safety, accessibility, and operating costs would also help you express the argument with greater flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “where,” “because,” and “therefore,” and the main ideas remain understandable. Some sentence structures are controlled, such as “There are some disadvantages regarding these concept too,” although the noun phrase itself needs correction. Other sentences contain several grammatical problems: “technology has developed to that extent where the automobiles now do not need a driver for it to drive” has unclear clause structure and pronoun reference, while “people who are not physicaly able to drive in conditions like intoxication, parkinsons these are some scenarios” is not a complete, well-punctuated construction. Review articles, agreement, sentence boundaries, and clause formation. Breaking long sentences into clearer units would improve accuracy without limiting structural variety.
