IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future all cars, buses and trucks will be driverless. The only people travelling inside these vehicles will be passengers.

Do you think the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is predicted that, in the future, all cars, buses and trucks will operate without drivers, with only passengers travelling inside them. I believe that the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages because they can improve road safety and make travelling more convenient.

The main advantage of driverless car having less accident as compared to humans. Because these are more efficient and sensor controlled they are more efficient than humans. Humans can make a mistake like poor sleeping some time mind-upset or using mobiles during driving also not wearing a seatbelt these are caused to a accident while driverless car use high tech softwares that can manage everything in a well mannered.

The draw back i thinks its a malware in software cause a problem in it. These are the possibilities of accident. If software fail while in a over speeding car its too much dangerous for a passengers they could not control manually. While another fair i notice is a eating jobs of drivers many drivers loss there jobs its very alarming condition for there families as well as for there children they cannot able to financially support there families. It could be controlled by a manufacturer or goverment should supports the drivers for making other source of income.

In conclusion, although driverless vehicles may cause technical problems and lead to job losses, I believe that their advantages are greater than their disadvantages. Improved road safety and more convenient journeys could benefit society significantly, provided that the technology is carefully tested and properly regulated.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You give a clear position in the introduction and conclusion: you believe the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. Road safety is relevantly supported with examples of human error, while the discussion of software failure and drivers losing work identifies two pertinent disadvantages. However, the advantages are not fully developed: convenience is asserted but not explained with a concrete example, and the safety point repeats that automated systems are more efficient without showing how this reduces accidents. The response also contains 239 words, so it is 11 words below the required minimum; 17 words copied from the task prompt were not counted. This shortfall limits the space available to explain and support your ideas. Develop each main point with a clear explanation or example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for benefits and drawbacks, and a conclusion that restates your view. This helps the reader follow the broad argument. However, progression within the body paragraphs is uneven. The safety paragraph moves from accident reduction to several causes of human error and then to software, but the links between these points are not always clear. The drawbacks paragraph combines technical failure and job losses, then shifts quickly to a proposed solution. Some connections, such as “Because” beginning a fragment and “While another fair i notice,” are unclear or inaccurate. Use clearer topic sentences and link each explanation directly to its main point; this would make the organisation more coherent and less dependent on basic transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “driverless vehicles,” “road safety,” “software,” “sensor controlled,” and “regulated,” so the reader can understand the main subject and concerns. There are also attempts to express more specific ideas, such as malware and employment effects. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate enough to make parts difficult to interpret: “a eating jobs” and “another fair i notice” do not convey the intended meaning clearly, while “well mannered” is not natural for describing how software operates. Spelling and word-form errors such as “goverment” and “softwares” also reduce control. Build a bank of accurate collocations for technology, safety and employment, and check spelling and word forms before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt some longer structures, including the conditional idea “If software fail while in a over speeding car…” and the concession in the conclusion beginning “although.” However, the range is limited, and complex attempts are often faulty. The opening body sentence, “The main advantage of driverless car having less accident,” is not a complete grammatical sentence. Other examples include “these are caused to a accident,” “many drivers loss there jobs,” and “they cannot able to financially support,” where verb forms, agreement, articles or sentence construction are inaccurate. Punctuation and capitalisation are also inconsistent. These errors sometimes make the reader work to understand your meaning. Practise complete subject–verb sentences and check verb forms, articles and plural agreement, especially when combining clauses.
