IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future all cars, buses and trucks will be driverless. The only people travelling inside these vehicles will be passengers.

Do you think the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

IN THE FOLLOWING YEARS, THERE ARE MAJOR CHANCES TO CONVERTE THE TRANSPORTATION VEHICLES INTO TOTALLY AUTOMATED VEHICLES, WHICH WILL RUNS BY ROBOTIC TECHNOLOGY INSTADE OF HUMANS. FROM MY PERSPECTIVE, IT WILL HAVE MORE DRAWBACKS AS COMPARE TO BENEFITES BECAUSE THERE WILL BE HIGHER CHANCES OF ACCIDENTS DUE TO NO INVOLEMENT OF HUMANS. IN THIS ESSAY MY POINT OF VIEW WILL BE MANTIONED WITH RELEVENT EXAMPLE.

ON THE ONE HAND, IN FUTURE HAVING AUTOMATIC VEHICLES CAN BE BENIFICIAL IN MANY WAYS LIKE, ZERO STRESS OF DRIVING, MORE PASSENGERS TO TRAVEL WITH, BUT THERE ARE MORE ISSUES WITH DRIVERLESS CARS THAT PASSANGERS WILL HAVE TO FACE. FOR A EXAMPLE IF ANY ACCIDANT MIGHT HAPPEN IN FUTURE THERE WILL BE NO INVOLVEMENT OF HUMAN IN THAT SITUATION FOR SAVING THE SYSTEM AND CAR BUT IF THE HUMAN DRIVES CAR THEY CAN SAVE THE CAR AND PASSANGER FROM THE INSIDENT.

ON THE OTHER HAND, MANY INDIVIDUELS ARE REALLY PASSIONATE ABOUT THE CAR DRIVING AND THEY CHOOSE THE OCCUPATION RELATED DRIVING AS A DESIRE OF THEIR LIFE SUCH AS, LOCOPILOT, BUS DRIVER AND TEXI DRIVERS. IF THE DRIVERS WILL BE REPLACED BY AUTOMATED CARS, MANY PEOPLE CAN LOSE THEIR INTREST OF DRIVING AND ALSO FACE UNEMPLOYEEMENT. IN JAPAN DUE TO THIS TECHNOLOGY PEOPLE LOSS THEIR JOBS BECAUSE OF THIS PEASONS AND FACE STRUGGLE WITH THEIR PASSION AND OCCUPATION.

IN CONCLUSION, THERE ARE FEW BENEFITS OF AUTOMATIC CARS BUT THE DRAWBACK OF IT HAS MORE WEIGHTAGE RATHER THAN POSITIVE IMPACTS LIKE LOOSING JOBS AND FACING ISSUES IN ACCIDENTS. THUS A DRIVER IN CAR WILL BE BENEFICAL IN FUTURE ASWELL.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you believe the disadvantages outweigh the benefits, and you address both sides of the question. You identify reduced driving stress as a benefit, then focus on accident risks and job losses as disadvantages. These are relevant points, but some are not fully explained. For instance, the claim that a human driver could “save the car and passenger” in an accident needs a clearer explanation of how human intervention would prevent harm, especially since the essay concerns future automated vehicles. The employment point is relevant, but the reference to Japan is vague and does not show how widespread or likely the effect is. Develop each main reason with a specific explanation or credible example to make your argument more convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present benefits and disadvantages, and a conclusion restates your position. The signposts “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow this arrangement. However, the first body paragraph shifts quickly from benefits to accident risks, and the relationship between these points could be made clearer. Some linking is also mechanical, while references such as “this technology” and “this situation” are not always precise. Organise each paragraph around one main point, then explain and illustrate it before moving on. More explicit links between the claim, explanation, and example would improve the progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “automated vehicles,” “passengers,” “occupation,” and “unemployment,” and you attempt some less common expressions. However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable and sometimes make the reader pause: examples include “converte,” “instade,” “passangers,” and “peasons.” Several phrases are also unnatural or imprecise, such as “more passengers to travel with,” “save the system and car,” and “more weightage.” These issues limit the clarity and flexibility of your vocabulary, even though your main meaning is generally recoverable. Check spelling carefully and learn common collocations for discussing technology, safety, and employment.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including conditional structures such as “if any accident might happen in future” and contrastive clauses beginning with “but.” This shows some range, but errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction remain. For example, “which will runs” should use the base form after “will,” and “there are major chances” does not fit the intended meaning or structure. The long opening sentence also contains several clauses that are difficult to control. Aim for accurate basic sentence patterns first, then build complexity. Review subject–verb agreement, articles, and conditional forms, and use full stops to separate ideas when a sentence becomes difficult to manage.
