IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future all cars, buses and trucks will be driverless. The only people travelling inside these vehicles will be passengers.

Do you think the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In coming years, all the vehicles will be self driven without the need of any physical driver, the passengers would be the only individuals sitting inside these vehicles. I believe the advantages outwight the disadvantages because auto driven means of transport would have more control than humans.

The prime reason is that the use of driverless cars will decrease the number of road accidents. Driverless cars will not break any traffic signal or overspeeding law becuase they would be design to follow the system prompts. This will result in no traffic violence and roadrage on roads. For example, China introduced food delivery robots which uses navigation and maps to reach its destination and reported much lower traffic violences than before.

The another reason is driverless cars will reduce the cost to transort companies. Companies would not need to provide salary to the driver each and every week which will save money. Additionally, a human driver can only drive around 10 to12 hours per day, whereas autopilot motor vehicles can run twice as that because they do not need to sleep as humans do. This will increase the productivity for the employer results in cost cutting. For Instance, Japan launched self driving buses which can operate all day with lower mantanance and the government reduced the ticket prices to half as compared to old prices.

In conclusion, I strongly think that automotive vehicles will outshine in the future as they will be safer as compared to human driving where human can sometimes try to break the law, so its advantages overshadow the disadvantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: you believe the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, and the conclusion restates this view. You address the question with two relevant benefits—fewer accidents and lower operating costs—and support them with examples involving delivery robots in China and buses in Japan. However, the discussion is weighted toward benefits, with little consideration of disadvantages such as technical failures, cybersecurity, or job losses. Some support is also asserted rather than explained: the examples do not clearly establish the claimed reductions in traffic violence or ticket prices. Develop each point with more precise evidence and acknowledge a counterargument before explaining why the benefits remain greater.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting separate reasons, and a conclusion. Sequencing is easy to follow, and signposts such as “The prime reason,” “Additionally,” and “In conclusion” help identify the stages of the argument. Cohesion is sometimes mechanical, however, because several sentences begin with formulaic transitions, and the links between claims and examples are not always explicit. For instance, the China example is introduced after the accident claim but does not clearly show how the robots demonstrate safer roads. Use more varied linking and explain the relationship between evidence and each main point. Clearer referencing would also help connect ideas without repeating “driverless cars” and “vehicles.”

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “traffic signal,” “overspeeding,” “productivity,” and “autopilot motor vehicles,” so the main ideas are generally understandable. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “outweigh the disadvantages” and “cost cutting.” However, inaccurate word choice, collocation, and spelling reduce precision: “self driven” and “auto driven” are awkward, “traffic violence” is not a natural expression in this context, and “mantanance” is misspelled. “Outwight” and “transort” also contain spelling errors. Aim for consistent, natural terms such as “autonomous vehicles,” “road accidents,” and “operating costs,” and check spelling carefully to make your meaning more precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast with “whereas” and a reason clause beginning “because.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “the passengers would be the only individuals” shifts into a conditional form without a clear reason, while “which uses navigation” does not agree with the plural noun “robots.” The phrase “This will increase the productivity for the employer results in cost cutting” also joins ideas without a correct grammatical link. Review subject–verb agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries, and use a structure such as “This will increase employers’ productivity and reduce costs.” More accurate control of these patterns would strengthen the response.
