Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Technology has made human life easier in every aspects. Some people believe that there will be no need for drivers for vehicles in the future because of artificial intelligence and technology and that will help to the elderly people. At the same time it will increase the safety on roads. While there are some disadvantages also. However, I believe the demerits will outweigh the merits of driverless vehicles.

On one hand, Driverless vehicles will increase the safety on the roads. This is because people wont be able to drive recklessly. Computers and automatic system will run the cars and they can easily detect the area of the road and the position of other cars so that no collision can occur .Also it will solve the traffic problems because all the cars or vehicles will maintain the signal as they are commanded in the computur system. Another advantage is that driverless vehicles will help the elderly people. The cars will be automated and the elderly people will be only passengers and they can easily enjoy their ride without driving. At the same time, the people who can not drive or do not have driving lisence can also enjoy the ride with the driverless vehicles.

On the other hand, Driverless vehicle will take the jobs of the drivers. The taxi, bus or any vehicle drivers will loose their job as the vehicle will be run by the computer system. Ultimately they have to think another ways for their livelihood. Also this will create pressure to the goverment to create extra job opportunities for these people. Moreover, malfunction of the system can cause accidents in the roads. For instance, A computer system in the driverless car stopped working or could not detect the nearby car properly , then it will cause accidents at that moment, whereas humans can easily change their direction or can take instant decisions.

In conclusion, Although driverless cars will help the elderly people, society and it will make our driving experience more easier, but many people will loose their jobs and livelihood. In my opinion, the disavantages will outweigh the advantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: you argue that the disadvantages outweigh the advantages, and you maintain this view in the conclusion. You address both sides with relevant points, including improved road safety and access for older people, set against job losses and the risk of system failure. The example of a car failing to detect another vehicle helps illustrate the safety concern. This meets the task well, but the ideas are not equally developed: the benefits are explained through several claims, while the employment point would be stronger with a clearer account of the scale or consequences of job displacement. The claim that computers mean “no collision can occur” is also too absolute. More qualified, specific support would make the argument more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for advantages and disadvantages, and a conclusion that restates your position. The progression from safety to accessibility, then to employment and technical failure, is easy to follow. You also use linking expressions such as “On one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “Moreover” to signal relationships between ideas. At times, however, these links feel mechanical, and some connections are unclear. The opening sentence “While there are some disadvantages also” is a fragment, and “At the same time” is used where the relationship between ideas is not fully specified. Improve cohesion by linking each example directly to the claim it supports and varying transitions rather than relying on a repeated contrast pattern.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “artificial intelligence,” “recklessly,” “malfunction,” and “livelihood,” and the reader can generally understand your points. There is some attempt to use more specific language, particularly when describing system failure and road safety. However, the range and control are uneven: several phrases are imprecise or unnatural, such as “maintain the signal,” “create extra job opportunities,” and “enjoy their ride.” Spelling errors such as “computur,” “goverment,” “lisence,” and “disavantages” also detract from accuracy. Aim for precise collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, describe vehicles as obeying traffic signals and explain that displaced drivers may need alternative employment.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including cause-and-effect clauses (“This is because…”) and a contrast introduced by “whereas.” These structures help communicate your reasoning, and the main message remains understandable. However, errors in sentence formation, agreement, articles, and punctuation occur across the response. For example, “While there are some disadvantages also” is an incomplete clause, and “the people who can not drive or do not have driving lisence” has problems with article use and sentence construction. There are also agreement and number issues in “Driverless vehicle will take the jobs” and “the vehicle will be run.” Review sentence boundaries and ensure subjects and verbs agree. Greater accuracy in these areas, alongside more controlled complex sentences, would strengthen the writing.
