Do you think the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

With the growing modernization in the field of automobiles, it is believed that future vehicles do not need a human driver. I believe human drivers are more efficent and safe.

Humans are generally better at problem solving, driving in a busy road or tackling traffic congestion can be done more efficently by a human driver instead of a computer who is running the commands in vehicles. To cope with other humans and driving in an emergency often needs a human brain to tackle. For instance, if the other driver is driving wrong and can cause an accident which might result in someone death need nano seconds to react, whereas humans have the ability to sense it way earlier than a vehicle which controlled by computer software. Similarly, it may lead to unwanted activites sourced at car's because of anyone can enter with fake identity.

Although, it all does not come without its costs. While it is cheaper to build computer softwares that can run vehicles and removes the extra work of verifying the drivers clean identity, howvever; risking life is not worthwhile and many individuals source of income will be completely vanished. For example there is a massive number of population of South Asia who went to Gulf to drive taxi and feed their families by sending them money.

I am driven to the conclusion although it removes the hustle for companies to check human drivers history and is cheaper in long term, but advantages clearly outweighs the disadvantages as human drivers are more efficent and provides safe travelling.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You give a clear overall view that the advantages of driverless vehicles do not outweigh the disadvantages, and you offer relevant concerns about emergency responses, safety, and lost employment. The example of South Asian workers driving taxis in the Gulf helps illustrate the economic impact. However, the discussion only partly addresses the comparison in the question: the advantages are mentioned mainly as lower costs and easier checks for companies, but are not explored in depth, while the claim that human drivers are safer is asserted rather than supported with convincing evidence. The point about people entering vehicles with fake identities is also unclear. Develop both sides more evenly and explain why your chosen concerns outweigh the benefits.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, and signposts such as “For instance” and “Similarly” help show relationships between points. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow: the discussion moves from emergency reactions to fake identities without explaining the connection, and the second body paragraph combines cost, identity checks and employment. Some linking is mechanical or inaccurate, as in “Although, it all does not come without its costs” and the final sentence’s “although … but.” Use clearer topic sentences, keep each paragraph focused on one main line of reasoning, and make references such as “it” and “this” explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “traffic congestion,” “emergency,” “identity,” and “source of income,” which helps communicate the main concerns. There are also attempts at less common phrasing, such as “tackle traffic congestion” and “driven to the conclusion.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unclear, including “growing modernization,” “driving wrong,” “unwanted activities sourced at car’s,” and “removes the hustle.” Spelling errors such as “efficent,” “efficently,” and “howvever” are noticeable. Choose more precise, natural expressions and check spelling; this will make your arguments easier to understand and more convincing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including conditional and contrast structures, but complex sentences are often faulty and errors occur frequently enough to make some ideas difficult to follow. For example, “driving in a busy road … can be done more efficiently by a human driver instead of a computer who is running the commands” has an unclear relative clause and awkward structure. In “someone death need nano seconds to react,” the possessive and sentence construction are missing, while “advantages clearly outweighs” has subject–verb disagreement. The conclusion also combines “although” with “but.” Practise building shorter, complete sentences first, then add subordinate clauses with accurate agreement, articles and punctuation.
