Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In the contemporary world, many people believe that with the advancement of technology all the vehicles would be self-driven with only passengers travelling in these vehicles. In my opinion, the advantages of self-driven vehicles outweigh the disadvantages. This essay will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of driverless vehicles.

The main benefits of driverless transportation systems are that they make mobility convenient and reduce accidents and traffic congestion. Usinig driverless cars, people who do not know driving can cummute easily without being dependent on a driver. This also solves parking problem. For instance, these vehicles can drop the users to their designated place and then travel to the nearby paking facility, reducing dependency on on-street parking. Furthermore, since no human involvement is needed and everything is automated, chances of making human mistakes that can cause accidents are also negligible. Self-diven vehicles with the help of internet can interact with the vehicles around them, helping them to make more informed decisions. This can reduce accidents and traffic congestion.

Despite the obvious benefits, there are also certain disadvantages. One of the major concern is that in case of technical failure there can be serious accidents. Due to technical glitches or bugs they can collide with the vehicles around them and cause serious injuries to the people cummuting in these vehicles. Also,If roads are closed for maintenance or other activities, self-driving cars may not receive clear information, which could cause them to take wrong decisions and create safety problems. In addition, these self-driven vehicles have high manufacturing and maintenance cost, making it difficult for everyone to afford these cars.

In conclusion, using driverless vehicles reduce dependency on humans, reduces frequency of accidents and traffic congestion. However, technical failures and lack of clear knowledge may cause serious threat to the people using these vehicles. I believe, self-driven cars with human instructions can be more effective approach to oveercome the disadvantages of driverless vehicles.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you believe the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, and the conclusion restates this view. You address both sides with relevant points, including convenience for non-drivers, parking, accident reduction, technical failures, and cost. The explanation of vehicles communicating with one another gives a useful reason for expecting safer, smoother traffic. However, some points are less fully developed than others: the affordability concern is stated but not explained with an example or consequence, and the final suggestion of “self-driven cars with human instructions” is not clearly reconciled with the driverless scenario or your overall position. Develop these points and make the comparison of benefits and risks more explicit to strengthen the response further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear overall structure, moving from an introduction to benefits, disadvantages, and a conclusion. Paragraphs are focused, and signposts such as “Furthermore,” “Despite the obvious benefits,” and “In addition” help readers follow the progression. The ideas within the benefits paragraph also build logically from convenience to safety and congestion. Some linking is a little mechanical, however, and the conclusion repeats earlier claims rather than drawing the comparison together. The reference to “lack of clear knowledge” is also not fully precise: it is unclear whether this means inadequate road information or a limitation in the vehicle’s system. Use more specific referencing and connect each paragraph’s points to the central judgement to make cohesion more flexible.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “automated,” “technical glitches,” “designated place,” and “traffic congestion,” which helps communicate the main ideas. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “on-street parking” and “manufacturing and maintenance cost.” However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, including “Usinig,” “cummute,” “paking,” “Self-diven,” and “oovercome.” Some collocations are awkward or imprecise: “solves parking problem,” “lack of clear knowledge,” and “serious threat” do not express the intended ideas naturally. Check spelling carefully and learn common word partnerships, such as “reduce the risk of accidents” and “a lack of reliable information,” to improve precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional clause (“if roads are closed for maintenance”) and a relative clause (“that can cause accidents”). Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “One of the major concern” needs plural agreement (“concerns”), while “using driverless vehicles reduce” and “reduces frequency” show inconsistent subject–verb agreement and article use. The sentence beginning “Also, If roads…” has incorrect capitalization and punctuation, and “I believe, self-driven cars…” is punctuated awkwardly. Review agreement, articles, and sentence punctuation, and proofread longer sentences. More consistently accurate control of these structures would make the argument smoother.
