IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future all cars, buses and trucks will be driverless. The only people travelling inside these vehicles will be passengers.

Do you think the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Driverless vehicles are the future of daily transportation. Cars, buses and trucks will be operated by the computer system installed in the vehicle. This can be good as people won't need to physically drive the vehicle and individuals with disabilities can use them without any support. At the same time, the cars will be more costly and accidents may happen because of system failure. I don't think the advantages of driverless vehicles will outweigh the disadvantages.

At one hand, individuals who loves peace and comfort during their travel don't need to drive the vehicle. While the system controlls the vehicle he can enjoy his journey. Moreover, the individuals who need support from others to drive their vehicle will also get benefits of driverless vehicles. Ultimately, anyone who hates driving will get better and efficient outcome from this type of vehicles.

On the other hand, the problem is driveless vehicles are not cost effective. They will need more maintainence than regular vehicles. Moreover, blindly relying on them may not be a good option. Technical failure always occurs in this type of systems. Humans with good driving skills can be trusted but vehicles with advance techonolgy can go wrong if one or two commands get wrong.

To conclude, the benefits look promising and they may provide good outcome but the disadvantages can't be ignored. The vehicles are great innovations for the people with disabilites but comfortness can never be ranked higher before a human life. So, I strongly believe that the advantages can never outweigh the disadvantages of having a driverless vehicle.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you believe the disadvantages outweigh the advantages, and you discuss benefits such as greater independence for people with disabilities alongside costs and technical failures. This addresses the central question, but the discussion is only partly developed. For example, “accidents may happen because of system failure” is a relevant concern, yet you do not explain how likely or serious this risk might be, or compare it directly with the benefits. The point about vehicles needing more maintenance is also asserted rather than supported. To strengthen the response, develop each main reason with a specific explanation or example and make the comparison between safety risks and convenience more explicit.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for advantages and disadvantages, and a conclusion that restates your view. Signposting such as “On the other hand” helps readers follow the shift in argument. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. “At one hand” does not introduce the contrast accurately, and “Ultimately” does not clearly follow from the preceding point. References such as “he” after “individuals” also make it less clear who is being discussed. Within the body paragraphs, ideas are listed more than developed, so the progression is limited. Use linking phrases that express the precise relationship between ideas, and connect each claim to its explanation or example.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “driverless vehicles,” “system failure,” “technical failure,” and “driving skills,” so the main ideas are generally understandable. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “cost effective” and “innovations.” However, several inaccurate or unnatural choices reduce precision: “comfortness,” “better and efficient outcome,” and “advance technology” do not express your meaning naturally. Spelling errors such as “maintainence,” “techonolgy,” and “disabilites” are noticeable, and “driveless” is inconsistent with the correct spelling. Build a more reliable range by checking word forms and spelling, and learn common collocations for cost, safety, and convenience.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including “At the same time, the cars will be more costly and accidents may happen because of system failure.” Most sentences communicate your meaning, but errors in agreement, pronouns, and sentence construction remain noticeable. For example, “individuals who loves” should use a plural verb, while “the system … he” shifts from a vehicle to a person without a clear grammatical link. “At one hand” also reflects an incorrect prepositional pattern. Some sentences are awkwardly formed, such as “While the system controlls the vehicle he can enjoy his journey,” where the subject reference and punctuation need attention. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement and clear pronoun reference while varying sentence structures.
