In the future all cars, buses and trucks will be driverless. The only people travelling inside these vehicles will be passengers.

Do you think the advantages of driverless vehicles outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the near future, it is expected that all transportations will run without a driver and only passengers will travel inside the vehicles. Although this will provide safety and convenience, I believe that the disadvantages such as system failure and trust issue slightly outweigh the advantages.

Nowadays, many vehicles are now modified with technology, which is a positive sign as it will remain beneficial in the future too. These developments reached its peak when car and bus companies introduced driverless vehicles. They are safe to travel and comfortable to enjoy a journey, as no one needs to focus on driving. Notably, there will be more automatic vehicles available in the future, which can be used for having better safety and greater convenience. For instance, recently in USA, scientists reavled that the number of these vehicles will increase 80% in the long run, which will provide people with safety and comfort.

On the other hand, there are some drawbacks as well, such as trust issues and systematic failure. It is clearly seen that many people are now complaining against driverless vehicles. They think that human experts are better than these automatic vehicles, as a result, many individuals are not fully getting the confidence to ride on these vehicles in the future. Another reason is systematic failure can cause accidents and sudden deaths, which can have detrimental effect in the society. For example, in India, recently an accident took place in Mumbai due to some systematic error. The car lost its control and crashed instantly. So, in the future, these disadvantages can put someone into danger.

In conclusion, despite having some benefits like convenience and safety, I firmly believe that the disadvantages slightly outweigh the advantages, because it can create trust issues among the public, while small errors can take someones life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: you believe the disadvantages “slightly outweigh” the benefits, and the conclusion restates this view. You address both sides, identifying convenience and safety as advantages and public distrust and system failure as disadvantages. The examples about a predicted increase in driverless vehicles and an accident in Mumbai help make the discussion relevant. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained: for example, the safety benefit is not compared directly with the risk of technical failure, and the Mumbai example needs more detail to show how it supports your overall judgement. Develop the consequences and weigh the two sides more explicitly to make the argument more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for benefits, one for drawbacks, and a conclusion. Linking phrases such as “Although,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” make the direction of the argument easy to follow. Within paragraphs, however, some connections are mechanical or unclear. “These developments reached its peak” does not clearly show how the preceding point leads to the introduction of driverless vehicles, and “as a result” joins ideas whose relationship could be explained more precisely. The examples also arrive abruptly. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each example directly to the claim it supports; this would make the progression smoother and cohesion less dependent on set phrases.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “driverless vehicles,” “convenience,” “system failure,” and “detrimental effect,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “outweigh the advantages.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “all transportations,” “systematic failure,” and “getting the confidence to ride.” Spelling errors such as “reavled” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural combinations and check word forms and spelling during revision. More precise vocabulary for describing risks and benefits would help you express the comparison with greater control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a concessive opening (“Although this will provide…”) and clauses with “which” and “as.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “These developments reached its peak” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “many vehicles are now modified with technology” uses an awkward tense construction for a general trend. In “which can have detrimental effect,” the article is missing, and “someone’s life” needs an apostrophe. Review agreement, articles, and possessives, and check that longer sentences have clear grammatical links. Greater accuracy across these structures would strengthen the response.
