Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is often believed that in the upcoming years, robotic vehicles will be preferred which means there will be no drivers in cars, buses, and trucks. These vehicles will contain only passengers. I believe that advantages of driverless cars do not outweigh the major drawbacks, including increased chances of accidents as a result of machine failure and higher unemployment.

There are various disadvantages of introducing robotic vehicles, with unexpected machine failure being the most prominent one. It is a well-known fact that driverless vehicles will be completely controlled by machines, which may lead to a sudden breakdown of the vehicle. Not only will this be harmful for the passengers sitting inside the vehicles, but it may also harm the nearby traffic. For instance, as per an article published in a popular magazine, in some foreign nations, the accident rates have hiked by noticeable percentages after the introduction of automated driverless vehicles. Therefore,it will be better to keep cars, buses and trucks under a human control in order to decrease the number of such life-taking road accidents.

Another considerable disadvantage of driverless vehicles is that it will lead to a rise in the unemployment rate. There are several individuals who earn a living throgh driving profession. Specifically taking into consideration the immigrants and international students surviving in cross-border countries, many of them earn money by driving taxis, public buses and trains. If all the transportation system is made machine based means driverless, it may not be able to pay their college fees, rents , groceries and their medical bills. As a result, it will become very challenging for them to survive. For example, truck drivers and uber drivers are the most common professions chosen by the immigrants. By making the vehicles driverless, their source of living will be completely destroyed, leaving them in problematic situation. Hence, driving is an incredible employment option should be kept accessible.

To conclude, although vehicles without drivers can seems as an impressive technological advancements, its drawbacks such as leading to increase in unemployment rates and higher chances of road accidents far outweigh its benefits.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you argue that the disadvantages outweigh the advantages, and the conclusion restates this view. Both main reasons—possible accidents caused by machine failure and job losses—are relevant and supported with explanations and examples. The discussion therefore addresses the task well. However, the response focuses almost entirely on disadvantages and gives little account of what the advantages might be, such as improved mobility or fewer errors caused by tired drivers. Some support is also less convincing: the claim about accident rates relies on an unspecified magazine article, while the impact on immigrants and students is developed more fully. Briefly acknowledging and weighing the benefits, and using more precise evidence, would make the argument more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear overall progression: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs develop separate disadvantages, and a conclusion summarises the argument. Paragraphing is appropriate, and signposts such as “Another considerable disadvantage” and “To conclude” help readers follow the structure. Within the paragraphs, you generally move from a claim to an explanation and then an example. Some linking is a little mechanical, however, with repeated transitions such as “Therefore,” “As a result,” and “Hence.” A few references are also unclear, particularly “it may not be able to pay their college fees,” where “it” does not clearly refer to the people who lose work. Use a wider range of natural links and make pronoun references explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “machine failure,” “unemployment rate,” “automated,” and “source of living,” and your meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “prominent” and “considerable disadvantage.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “surviving in cross-border countries,” “driving profession,” and “life-taking road accidents” do not express the intended ideas naturally. Spelling errors such as “throgh” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise, conventional combinations and check spelling; for example, refer to “people working as drivers,” “living abroad,” and “fatal road accidents.” This would make the vocabulary more flexible and reliable.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including the inversion in “Not only will this be harmful…” and conditional structures such as “If all the transportation system is made…”. These attempts help you explain causes and consequences, and most errors do not prevent understanding. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain, however. In the conclusion, “vehicles without drivers can seems” has incorrect verb agreement, and “an impressive technological advancements” combines an incorrect article with a plural noun. There are also sentence-boundary and punctuation problems, such as “trains. If” and “Therefore,it,” as well as inconsistent spacing around commas. Review agreement, articles, and punctuation, and proofread complex sentences to improve control.
