IELTS Writing Task 2 question

It is sometimes possible to pay somebody to do things you don't want to do, or don't have time to do, for example, household chores or looking after children.

Is this a good way of providing work for others?

Should people do these things themselves?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, everyone is busy in their own lives. We have fixed schedule for a number of things, and sometimes we don't want to involve ourselves in someone's work. For example, my friend and her husband both are working professionals. When my friend came back from work, she did the household chores, cook food, and cleaned a whole house. Even though she is the one who take care after children. Moreover, when her husband came home from office, he took nap and after that he watched tv. They both have huge fight on these small issues. Hence, after all this mess, her husband released his mistake. Then he started help his wife in other works.

According to me, it is the best way to help others. In this hustling-bustling life, we don't know what is going on in other person's life.

But if we offered a small help to them, which might be the biggest support for them at that time.

In general, people shouldn't do these things more commonly for themselves. Because they stuck in one cycle without knowing that they have support as well.

My conclusion is that if you have a leisure time and you are the people's person then never afraid to help someone. If any other will do these things for me. I will grateful for that guy.

So, make your self approachable and helpful so your friends, and family can tell you about their issues and you are available to resolve them.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, which negatively impacts the task achievement score. While you attempt to address both parts of the prompt—discussing the benefits of outsourcing chores and whether people should do them themselves—the development is superficial. The arguments lack depth and the connection between the personal anecdote about your friend and the broader societal question is tenuous. To improve, you should expand on the economic implications of providing work for others and provide a more balanced, structured analysis of the personal responsibility aspect. The conclusion is also somewhat disconnected from the main prompt, focusing more on being a 'people's person' than on the specific task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. Transitions between ideas are often abrupt or missing, such as the jump from the anecdote to the general opinion. Cohesive devices are used in a limited and sometimes repetitive way (e.g., 'Moreover', 'Hence', 'According to me'). The referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the flow of your argument. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence that directly relates to the prompt.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is generally basic and repetitive. Phrases like 'hustling-bustling life' and 'do these things' are used, but there is a lack of more precise, academic, or topic-specific vocabulary. There are also some issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'released his mistake' (should be 'realized') and 'I will grateful' (should be 'I would be grateful'). To reach a higher band, you need to incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary related to employment, domestic management, and social dynamics, while ensuring accurate word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('she did the household chores, cook food, and cleaned'), tense inconsistencies ('she is the one who take care'), and sentence fragments ('Even though she is the one who take care after children'). You rely heavily on simple sentence structures, and attempts at more complex sentences often contain errors. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, particularly verb tenses and subject-verb agreement, before attempting more complex grammatical structures.
