IELTS Writing Task 2 question

It is sometimes possible to pay somebody to do things you don't want to do, or don't have time to do, for example, household chores or looking after children.

Is this a good way of providing work for others?

Should people do these things themselves?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Life in the mordern era is very hectic even for women. Because in the mordern era women earn for the household and also run the household. And due to this they don't get enough time for themselves. Ideally it is a good idea to pay somebody and provide them work too in this kind of scenario. We will further discuss both of side that should we do our own work or pay somebody and provide them work.

After modernzation, women have also started working and so most of them are unable to handle household and cooperate life together. For example if a woman is working a 9-5 job, she has to take all the stress at work about meetings, deadlines, projects etc. and also have to take care after the house chores like cooking, cleaning, dishwashing, laundry, groceries and much more. She would be doing a 12 hour shift with maybe 5 hours of sleep. In this kind of busy schedule she would truly appreciate a helping hand. By getting a helping hand, she gets a little time for herself and is also helping the person who is doing the work for her by paying.

On the other hand, some women perfer to manage everything on there own with any help from outside just by time management. Doing meal preps for a week, doing all the household chores in a day and running errands whenever they get time. They also manage to officially take time off from work to give their non divided attention to kids and their partner. By doing this, they also save the money of the help.

In my opinion, having a help makes you dependent but gives you mental peace but doing the chores on your own keeps you active, involved in the household and also is very good for your pockets.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the benefits of providing work for others and the perspective on whether individuals should perform these tasks themselves. The position is clear, although the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the discussion on the benefits of hiring help focuses primarily on stress reduction, while the counter-argument focuses on financial savings and personal involvement. To reach a higher band, the response would benefit from more nuanced exploration of the societal implications of outsourcing domestic labor, rather than focusing solely on the individual's schedule. The conclusion is present but could be more effectively integrated with the main body arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand' and 'For example' are used to signal shifts in the argument. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel repetitive. The use of referencing is generally clear, though the opening paragraph is slightly disjointed due to the phrasing 'both of side'. Overall, the progression of ideas is easy to follow, and paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two main viewpoints.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some spelling errors, such as 'mordern' (modern) and 'perfer' (prefer), and minor collocation issues like 'cooperate life' (corporate life). While the range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. The use of 'non divided attention' is slightly awkward; 'undivided attention' would be more natural. Expanding the range of topic-specific vocabulary would help improve the score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'there own' instead of 'their own' and 'having a help' (which should be 'hiring help' or 'getting help'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some issues with sentence boundaries and run-on sentences in the introduction. While these errors are noticeable, they do not significantly impede communication. To improve, the writer should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and possessive pronouns.
