IELTS Writing Task 2 question

It is sometimes possible to pay somebody to do things you don't want to do, or don't have time to do, for example, household chores or looking after children.

Is this a good way of providing work for others?

Should people do these things themselves?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In this modern world, nowadays people hire persons to do their personal work and give them a good salary. Most of the time they are busy on that day because of work and a busy schedule. I partially agree with this view because people get jobs, and they feed their families by doing the jobs, and at the same time they are totally dependent on others. In this essay I will discuss both the views and give my opinion.

Firstly, there are many reasons why people hire persons to do their work and take care of the family and children. They have busy schedules and not enough time to spend with their loved ones. Secondly, most of the time they provide babysitting for their children to take care of the family. For example, most of the well-known families who have their big businesses hire those people for their home and wellness.

However, hiring people for your personal work is becoming a person too lazy and obese; sometimes they totally depend on their maid and personal workers. As a result, when they do not come to their home to do their work, they feel frustrated and angry, which is very harmful for them. For instance, all the industry actors and actresses have their personal trainers and caretakers; if they do not come for one or two days, they feel very angry and frustrated.

In conclusion, hiring people for betterment and future wellness is good for the economy, but at the same time it is harmful for those people who rely on the others so they do their personal work by themselves.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the economic benefits of hiring help and the personal implications of doing tasks oneself. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the argument regarding 'industry actors and actresses' is a weak example that does not fully illustrate the broader societal impact of outsourcing chores. The position is clear, but the explanation lacks depth and specific, well-reasoned evidence. To improve, you should expand on the 'why' and 'how' behind your arguments, ensuring that each point is fully explored rather than just stated.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'However', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader through the argument. However, the transition between ideas within paragraphs is sometimes mechanical. For example, the link between the introduction and the first body paragraph is slightly abrupt. Additionally, some referencing is unclear, such as the phrase 'those people' in the second paragraph, which lacks a clear antecedent. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring clear pronoun reference would enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and range required for a higher band. There is some repetition of basic terms like 'work', 'people', and 'things'. Phrases such as 'well-known families' and 'industry actors' are somewhat simplistic. There are also minor collocation issues, such as 'becoming a person too lazy', which is grammatically awkward. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use more sophisticated vocabulary and collocations, such as 'outsourcing domestic responsibilities' or 'socio-economic implications', to demonstrate a broader lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist throughout the text. For example, 'hiring people for your personal work is becoming a person too lazy' is syntactically incorrect. There are also issues with article usage and subject-verb agreement, such as 'they provide babysitting for their children to take care of the family'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on sentence construction and proofreading for basic agreement errors will be beneficial.
