Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, its often argued that the majority of people prefer to travel foreign for their vacations instead of exploring domestically. While this trend offers several benefits, such as exposure to diverse cultures and memorable experiences, although it also has some drawbacks, including financial, and social concerns.

Firstly, international trips are generally more expensive than domestic holidays due to the cost of flights, accommodation, and travel insurance. As a result, many people may face financial difficulties or exceed their travel budget. Furthermore, the language barrier can be a major challenge, as travellers may struggle to communicate with local residents in emergencies or when they need assistance. For example, many tourists who visit France face language barriers, making it difficult for them to seek help or obtain important information. Therefore, these financial and communication challenges may reduce its overall convenience.

Despite these challenges, benefits of this trend are far more significant. To begin with one major benefit is that it exposes people to versatile cultures, traditions, and lifestyles, helping them develop a broader perspective and a greater knowledge of cultural diversity. Moreover, visiting foreign countries allows tourists to explore world-famous landmarks and unique attractions that cannot be experienced in their home country. Consequently, international travel creates unforgettable memories and promotes personal growth, making it a worthwhile experience.

To conclude, although travelling aboard can be costly and have social challenges, I believe that the pros it offer in terms of exploring culture, and unique experience clearly surpass the disadvantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response is completely off-topic. The prompt asks about the ethics and implications of paying others to perform household chores or childcare. However, your essay discusses the pros and cons of international versus domestic travel. Because you have failed to address the task instructions entirely, the score for Task Achievement is significantly impacted. Additionally, the response is slightly under the 250-word minimum requirement, which further affects the score. To improve, you must carefully read the prompt and ensure your ideas directly answer the specific questions asked. In this case, you should have focused on the socio-economic impact of outsourcing domestic labor and the personal value of performing such tasks oneself.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

Despite the essay being off-topic, the internal structure of the text is logical. You use paragraphing effectively to separate different points, and cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Furthermore', 'To begin with', and 'To conclude' are used to guide the reader through your argument. The progression of ideas within your paragraphs is clear, and referencing is generally accurate. However, because the content does not relate to the prompt, the overall coherence of the response in the context of the exam task is undermined. To reach a higher band, ensure that your logical structure supports a relevant argument that directly addresses the prompt's requirements.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a reasonable range of vocabulary, such as 'diverse cultures', 'financial difficulties', 'language barrier', and 'personal growth'. These terms are used appropriately in the context of your discussion on travel. There are no significant spelling errors, and the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly. However, to achieve a higher band, you should aim to incorporate more sophisticated, less common lexical items and demonstrate a more precise control over collocations. While your current vocabulary is adequate for the level of the essay, it lacks the variety and precision required for higher band scores.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'While this trend offers several benefits... although it also has some drawbacks'. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'its often argued' (it is) and 'pros it offer' (offers). Punctuation is generally handled well, though there are some unnecessary commas, such as in 'including financial, and social concerns'. Your control of grammar is generally good, and the errors present do not impede communication. To improve, focus on eliminating small subject-verb agreement errors and refining your use of complex sentence structures to ensure they are grammatically sound.
