IELTS Writing Task 2 question

It is sometimes possible to pay somebody to do things you don't want to do, or don't have time to do, for example, household chores or looking after children.

Is this a good way of providing work for others?

Should people do these things themselves?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The world we live in currently, is a place where it is possible to pay people in order to get their chores done for them when they do not want to do it themselves. In this essay, we shall get into the details of this from my point of view.

To gain some perspective on this topic, there is something that you hate doing- dishes, for example. You have a 9-5 that you have to worry about, and the job also keeps you busy for the better part of the day, and you are earning enough to have somebody else come and get those dishes (that you hate doing so much) done for you. Is it not practical to do so?

As an international student, struggling to make her way through, I have personally done my fair share of baby-sitting, and household chores in order to earn a few extra bucks in a day. I have been to houses where I've been treated so kindly, and I've been to houses where I wasn't treated so kindly. Those are the people we are to question. To answer to the question I dropped earlier, it is definitely alright to pay someone to do your chores for you and help their finances a bit, but I do not think it is okay to mis-treat them while doing so. It should be understood that, just because you are paying them, it does not keep in any position of power or hold you any higher to them.

Therefore, I support this business of the possibility to pay somebody to do things you don't want to do, as it would help them out too, but only until the decorum and kindness is maintained.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the economic benefit of providing work and the moral/personal aspect of doing chores oneself. However, the development is somewhat limited. While you provide a personal anecdote, the discussion on whether people 'should' do these things themselves is brief and lacks a broader societal perspective. The essay is quite short, and while it meets the minimum length, the ideas could be expanded further to reach a higher band. The position is clear, but the arguments could be more robustly supported with additional reasoning or examples beyond personal experience.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. You use some cohesive devices like 'Therefore' and 'To gain some perspective', though the transitions between the personal anecdote and the general argument could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the overall structure feels a bit informal due to the conversational tone. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some sentences are slightly repetitive in their structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'practical', 'finances', and 'decorum'. However, the vocabulary is somewhat basic and repetitive in places (e.g., 'do' is used frequently). There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'mis-treat' (should be one word: mistreat) and 'it does not keep in any position of power' (which is slightly awkward phrasing). To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and avoid overly conversational phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as the unnecessary comma in the first sentence ('The world we live in currently, is...') and issues with prepositional usage and article placement. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. You have attempted some complex structures, but they are not always perfectly controlled. Focusing on punctuation and subject-verb agreement will help improve your accuracy.
