Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that more money should be invested by the governments on public transport, while others think that building new roads can reduce traffic congestion. This essay will discuss both points of view before explaining why I believe that public transport would be a better investment to improve the nation's infrastructure.

Firstly, many individuals believe that building more roads will be a better decision to eliminate traffic congestion. This is because every people has a hectic schedule and it is significant to solve the issue of traffic. Moreover, roads are the one on which people waste their crucial time due to the lack of road lanes. As a result, it further leads to traffic congestion. For example, if there are more roads , there will be a less wastage of time and people can invest that time in other activities which might be proved as an increase in productivity.

On the other hand, it is widely believed governments should spend more money on public transport. The main reason for this is that people, who do not have private vehicles, tend to use public transport for commuting everyday. Additionally, using public transport is much more effective and budget friendly than using personal vehicles. For instance, individuals can travel without having problems of limited seats and they do not have to stand for longer times in a public transport such as bus or a train if government introduce more public vehicles.

Although building more roads can have positive impact on traffic problems, investing on public transport would be a better perspective to encourage people to use public vehicles instead of travelling in their own. To conclude, governments should spend money on introducing more public vehicles to relax the people from the problem of overcrowding.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response is completely off-topic. The prompt asks about the ethics and implications of paying others to perform household chores or childcare. However, your essay discusses public transport versus building new roads. Because you have failed to address the actual task instructions, the response cannot be assessed for task achievement in relation to the prompt provided. In an actual IELTS examination, this would result in a very low score for Task Response as the content is irrelevant to the question asked. To improve, ensure you carefully read and identify the core topic of the prompt before planning your response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

Despite the off-topic content, the essay is structured logically with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', 'On the other hand', and 'To conclude' to link your ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different points. While the content does not answer the prompt, the internal flow and organization of the text are coherent and easy to follow. The progression of ideas is logical within the context of the argument you chose to present.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. Phrases like 'traffic congestion', 'hectic schedule', 'infrastructure', and 'budget friendly' are used correctly. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'might be proved as an increase' (should be 'might prove to be an increase') and 'relax the people from the problem' (which is slightly unnatural). However, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'every people' (should be 'everyone' or 'every person'), 'roads are the one on which' (should be 'roads are where'), and 'if government introduce' (should be 'if the government introduces'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, though there are minor errors with comma placement. While these errors are noticeable, they do not significantly impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles.
