IELTS Writing Task 2 question

It is sometimes possible to pay somebody to do things you don't want to do, or don't have time to do, for example, household chores or looking after children.

Is this a good way of providing work for others?

Should people do these things themselves?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

It has been observed that several times people pay others to do their tasks such as house cleaning, cooking or taking care of their children. I believe that this is a generous way of creating work opportunities for some people. However, if possible these things should be done by themselves as it will keep them active and close to their child.

To begin with, not all individuals have a higher education which could lead them to white collar jobs. Therefore, this kind of work brings employment options for those who lack basic education or have minimal of it. Moreover, people who have hectic schedules may not be able to get enough time to focus on these responsibilities. They can easily hire people to do their jobs whereas they can spend time on other works. For example, many actresses hire nannies to take care of their child so that they can completely focus on their career along with having benefit of a family. Thus, it is a great approach to provide work for those who need.

On the other hand, doing household tasks or taking care of their own children brings a better sense of accomplishment. If a person involves themselves in basic duties of maintaining and cleaning the house, they tend to have good healthy body as they use their muscles in the process. In addition, if a child is given care by their own parents that would result in a better bonding between them. For instance, it is seen that children who has spent more time with their families during their early ages are more connected as compared to those who are raised by care takers.

To conclude, it is not a bad idea to get help when it comes to raising a child or getting household chores done by outsiders. This is a medium of generating employment opportunities for many. But if these tasks are done personally they enhance well-being of a person and help them to connect better with their offspring.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the benefits of providing work for others and the personal value of performing these tasks oneself. The position is clear throughout. The ideas are relevant and supported with examples, such as the mention of actresses hiring nannies and the health benefits of manual labor. However, the development of ideas is somewhat general. For instance, the argument regarding 'white collar jobs' could be more precisely linked to the economic necessity of service roles. Overall, the response covers all requirements of the task well, providing a balanced perspective that is logically extended.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', 'On the other hand', and 'In addition' are used effectively to link sentences and paragraphs. However, there is some minor mechanical usage of transitions, and the referencing could be slightly more sophisticated. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the overall structure supports the reader's understanding of the argument without any significant lapses in flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning with some flexibility. The student uses relevant terms like 'hectic schedules', 'employment opportunities', and 'sense of accomplishment'. There are some minor inaccuracies in collocation, such as 'minimal of it' instead of 'minimal education' or 'have good healthy body' instead of 'maintain a healthy body'. While the range is adequate for the task, it lacks the more sophisticated, precise, or idiomatic expressions required for a higher band score. The errors do not impede communication, but they do highlight a need for more natural word choices.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the student attempts complex sentences, there are persistent grammatical errors, such as 'children who has spent' (subject-verb agreement) and 'enhance well-being of a person' (missing article). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are occasional slips. The majority of sentences are clear, and the errors rarely impede communication. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on improving subject-verb agreement and the consistent use of articles, as well as increasing the variety of complex grammatical structures used.
