IELTS Writing Task 2 question

It is sometimes possible to pay somebody to do things you don't want to do, or don't have time to do, for example, household chores or looking after children.

Is this a good way of providing work for others?

Should people do these things themselves?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is argued that people should hire others to perform household chores and look after their children, while others believe that everyone should do these tasks themselves. In my opinion, people should hire someone to handle household responsibilities and take care of their children when they have busy schedules.

On the one hand, people with busy schedules may not have enough time to perform their daily activities, and they may also be unable to spend sufficient time with their children. In this situation, babysitters and domestic workers can assist them in fulfilling their responsibilities, such as washing clothes, doing the dishes, cleaning rooms and kitchens, and taking children to the park for their physical well-being. Therefore, people are able to maintain a healthy work-life balance more effectively. Furthermore, hiring domestic workers can provide others with valuable opportunities to earn money.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 140 words. Consequently, the development of ideas is significantly restricted. While you have addressed both parts of the prompt—discussing the benefits of hiring help and the perspective that people should do things themselves—the arguments are underdeveloped. The response lacks a conclusion and fails to provide a balanced discussion or sufficient examples to support the points made. To improve, you must expand on your arguments with specific examples and ensure you provide a comprehensive answer that meets the length requirement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction and a body paragraph. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand' and 'Furthermore' to link ideas. However, because the essay is incomplete and lacks a concluding paragraph, the overall progression is stunted. The paragraphing is appropriate for the limited content provided, but the lack of a full structure prevents a higher score. To improve, ensure you include a clear introduction, at least two well-developed body paragraphs, and a summary conclusion to provide a cohesive flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication. You use relevant terms such as 'household responsibilities', 'work-life balance', and 'domestic workers'. However, the range is somewhat limited and repetitive. There is little attempt to use less common or more sophisticated vocabulary that would demonstrate a higher level of lexical control. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and topic-specific vocabulary to enhance the sophistication of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The grammar is generally accurate, and your sentences are easy to follow. You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'In this situation, babysitters and domestic workers can assist them in fulfilling their responsibilities'. There are no major grammatical errors that impede communication. However, the range of structures is limited, and you rely on fairly standard sentence patterns. To achieve a higher band, aim to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice, while maintaining your current level of accuracy.
