IELTS Writing Task 2 question

It is sometimes possible to pay somebody to do things you don't want to do, or don't have time to do, for example, household chores or looking after children.

Is this a good way of providing work for others?

Should people do these things themselves?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

It is becoming increasingly common for people to pay others to do tasks they do not have time or desire to complete, such as household chores and childcare. I believe this can be a take responsibility for some tasks themselves.

On the one hand, paying someone to do household work can provide valuable job opportunities. Many people, particularly those with limited education or work experience, can earn a stable income by working as a cleaner, babysitters or gardeners. At the same time, busy people can save time and concentrate on their jobs or other important responsibilities. For example, working parents may hire a babysitter to look after their children while they are at work. This benefits both sides because the parents receive support and the workers earn money.

On the other hand, people should not depend completely on others for their daily responsibilities. Simple household tasks, such as cooking, cleaning, and washing clothes, are important life skills. Doing these activities can also help family members become more independent and responsible. In addition, parents should spend enough time with their children because emotional support and guidance cannot always be provided by a paid worker.

In my opinion, hiring someone is a practical solution when people are extremely busy or unable to complete certain tasks. However, they should continue to manage basic responsibilities themselves whenever possible. For instance, a family could hire a cleaner once a week but still cook meals and spend quality time together.

In conclusion, paying others to perform unwanted tasks can create useful employment and save time. Nevertheless, people should maintain a balance and remain responsible for their essential family and household duties.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the economic benefits of outsourcing tasks and the personal necessity of maintaining life skills. The position is clear throughout, and the ideas are well-supported with relevant examples, such as the mention of working parents and the distinction between hiring a cleaner versus managing daily cooking. The introduction contains a minor grammatical error in the final sentence ('I believe this can be a take responsibility...'), which slightly obscures the thesis statement, but the overall development of the argument is logical and balanced. The response covers all requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct aspect of the prompt, moving from the benefits of job creation to the importance of personal responsibility. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand,' 'On the other hand,' 'In addition,' and 'Nevertheless' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the relationship between ideas is clear. The flow is natural, and the structure supports the overall argument well.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task. You demonstrate a good range of topic-specific language, such as 'stable income,' 'life skills,' 'practical solution,' and 'essential family and household duties.' While the vocabulary is generally accurate, it is mostly functional rather than sophisticated. There are no significant errors in word choice or collocation that impede meaning. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more precise or idiomatic collocations to enhance the nuance of your arguments.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good control of a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and your punctuation is generally accurate. There is a noticeable error in the introduction ('I believe this can be a take responsibility...'), which is a grammatical slip that slightly impacts the clarity of the opening. However, the rest of the essay is grammatically sound. You use complex structures effectively, such as conditional clauses and relative clauses, which shows a good command of English grammar.
