IELTS Writing Task 2 question

It is sometimes possible to pay somebody to do things you don't want to do, or don't have time to do, for example, household chores or looking after children.

Is this a good way of providing work for others?

Should people do these things themselves?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Its often debatable that individuals should hire contractors from outside for little issues at home and daycare for their kids rather then doing themselves.

According to my opinion this is a great way to give an opportunity to others to earn few money however we can save few dollars on some small things to.

Firstly, we cant slove the issues that we are not able to fix or we dont have enough knowledge about it,to elaborate it more, a person can fix regular damage at his home but can't fix the plumbing issues at his home he eventually would need experienced contractor to cure the leaks. However, small things like cutting grass or cleaning house and few regular task we can do by ourselves on free time and save plenty of money.

On other hand most of the parents work full time jobs at a same for covering up thier all expenses and does not left with enough time to stay at home with thier kids , so the only option they left with is to hire daycare for their children's which will cost them extra but they but they also ensure the safety of the kids. Latest study shows that more then eighty percent of the Canada parents hired someone to take of their little loved ones so they can continue their jobs, however other best option could be for them is to work from home which will help them in saving some money and spending more time with their kids.

In conclusion, at some point we need to call someone from outside to fix the isssues that we can not, but learning more skills and doing things in different way will also helo them in saving the amount they are spending on agents.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the economic benefit of hiring others and the personal decision to perform tasks oneself. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the argument regarding daycare is relevant but lacks depth in exploring the broader social implications of outsourcing childcare. The position is clear, but the supporting arguments could be more thoroughly extended to reach a higher band. The response covers all requirements, but the analysis remains at a basic level, which is characteristic of a Band 6 performance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Firstly', 'On other hand', and 'In conclusion', though some are used mechanically or with minor errors (e.g., 'On other hand' should be 'On the other hand'). Referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences is occasionally interrupted by awkward phrasing. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure helps the reader follow the argument, despite some minor lapses in cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. There are several instances of awkward word choices, such as 'cure the leaks' (instead of 'fix' or 'repair') and 'earn few money' (instead of 'earn some money'). The student attempts to use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'contractor' and 'expenses', but the range is limited. Spelling errors, such as 'slove' for 'solve' and 'helo' for 'help', are present but do not significantly impede communication. To improve, the student should focus on collocations and more natural phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, including issues with articles ('the plumbing issues at his home'), subject-verb agreement ('parents... does not left'), and prepositions. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with several run-on sentences and missing commas. While the meaning is generally clear, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. The student needs to focus on sentence construction and proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy.
