IELTS Writing Task 2 question

It is sometimes possible to pay somebody to do things you don't want to do, or don't have time to do, for example, household chores or looking after children.

Is this a good way of providing work for others?

Should people do these things themselves?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is irrefutable that technology is rising day by day. However, in these days people are doing less work by themselves, and they pay others for doing work such as household chores and looking after children. There are numerous reasons of this notion, which I will explain in upcoming paragraphs.

Convincing arguments can be made that there are plenty of benefits to providing work for others. To start with, nowadays people become workaholic. In other words, they have less time due to household activities, so they prefer to hire someone for doing work at home. It can also be claimed that some people want to enjoy a luxury lifestyle and some want to show their status in society; these are the main reasons why they like to pay others. It can also be taken into account that most of the individuals belong to middle families, so they want to earn money to fulfill their basic needs, and others help them in this way; that is reason to do others work also.

Admittedly, there are some reasons why masses should do work by themselves. Firstly, in this today's era, it is harder to trust everyone because people do many frauds. So it is not safe to give entry to the house without knowing the person. For instance, they can commit crime and blackmail the owners as well. Secondly, most masses do work in the office while sitting on the chairs, which leads to obesity, so people should do household chores by themselves so that they can do some physical work and stay fit and fine.

To recapitulate, it can also seem that there is some substantial evidence to prove my views better. I would strongly recommend that there are a number of reasons for doing work by themselves and by others, which I mentioned above.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the benefits of providing work for others and the reasons why people might prefer to do tasks themselves. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For example, the argument about 'middle families' is unclear and lacks a strong connection to the prompt. The introduction is slightly off-topic by mentioning technology, which is not relevant to the core question. While the position is clear, the supporting arguments could be more thoroughly extended with more specific examples or deeper analysis to reach a higher band. The conclusion is also quite weak, failing to summarize the main points effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'To start with', 'In other words', and 'Firstly' are used to link sentences and paragraphs. However, some transitions feel mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as in the final paragraph where the summary is vague. The use of paragraphing is appropriate, but the overall flow could be improved by using a wider variety of cohesive devices to connect ideas more naturally rather than relying on standard list-like transitions.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. There are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'middle families' instead of 'middle-class families' and 'do others work' instead of 'perform work for others'. The phrase 'fit and fine' is a common idiom but is slightly informal for an IELTS essay. While the student attempts to use some topic-specific vocabulary, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simpler, repetitive phrasing throughout the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'in these days people are doing less work' (should be 'these days, people do less work') and 'there are numerous reasons of this notion' (should be 'reasons for'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but there are minor errors in article usage and preposition choice. While the errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. A greater variety of error-free complex structures would be needed for a 7.0 or above.
